Steve Jobs famously said that great artists steal, and the company has often taken that mantra to the extreme over the years. It has also improved the other colors in the polyurethane range, which it claims are now more vibrant — they all now come with a color matched microfiber lining too. The leather versions haven’t been changed except with the addition of the color matched microfiber lining. The Smart Covers are available in the Apple Store and are still priced at $39 for the Polyurethane model and $69 for the Leather version.

It’s ridiculously easy to use, the interface is clean and simple and it just works. I've asked a number of questions -- real ones, not questions like "What is the meaning of life?" -- and have been totally impressed with how my interaction with the iPhone has changed. But there are more things I'd love to be able to do with Siri, which is the reason for this post. Everyone should understand that Siri is currently a beta product from Apple. Marco Arment, developer of Instapaper, has provided some intriguing usage stats for his bestselling app. While the numbers aren't representative of the entire iOS ecosystem, the fact that Instapaper is a popular paid app (almost always in the top 5 paid apps in the News category on the App Store) makes these stats worth looking at for developers looking to efficiently design and market their apps. Sign-up for the service is free and can be done from within the Pulse News app. All that's required is a user-name and a password. When you see a story you want to save, click on the star symbol. Je nach Umgebung und Anwendung können (für mich) ein paar Lichtstärken mehr oder weniger den entschiedenen Unterschied ausmachen. Farbenfrohe Spiele dürfen mir in die Augen leuchten, schwarze Schriftzeichen auf weißem (Browser-)Hintergrund dagegen nicht. Der (Programm-)Wechsel in die Systemeinstellungen gehört daher zu einem meiner regelmäßigen Botengänge. Mit iOS 4.2.1 hat zumindest das iPad den Helligkeits-Schieberegler leichter zugänglich in die linke Schnellstarter-Leiste des Multitasking-Switchers platziert. Auch das iPhone hat an dieser Stelle, die über einen Doppel-Klick auf den Home-Button zu erreichen ist, ausgebaut. Zwei Fingerwisch-Bewegungen in dieser unteren Menüzeile befördern eine Lautstärke-Kontrolle zu Tage. Durch das sommerliche iOS-4-Update, mit seiner neuen Ordner-Funktion, kam ordentlich Bewegung in die Homescreen-Sortierung. Mittlerweile besitze ich nicht mehr als zwei Homescreen-Seiten; starte die Programme jedoch größtenteils direkt über die Spotlight-Suche. Instapaper Pro, an excellent app that allows you to read saved webpages without internet connectivity (and one of my go-to apps on my iPhone and iPad), has just been updated with several new features, with the most notable being the redesign of the reading screen on the iPad version. Good news folks, the very popular web service Instapaper has just announced and presented an iPad app. If you don’t know the concept; it’s fairly simple. Whenever you come across something that you like online but don’t want to read it right away, Instapaper allows you, thanks to its “Read Later” bookmarklet, to save it for later access. These bookmarked articles are then made available in an optimized format through their web interface or the Instapaper iPhone app, which can also download these for offline reading. One thing I find myself doing is searching the net for new applications. Personally iTunes and the new update has made it almost impossible to browse for new apps. In my search of the web I stumbled upon firstand20. It’s a site that displays the iPhone home screen of Developers, Tech Writers and Bloggers. I think it’s a pretty interesting way of showing off what some pretty influential people in the scene have on their iPhones. On the home page you will see a scoreboard of the applications that are on the most home screens on the site. Meine persönliche Technik-Aufstellung hat sich durch iPhone OS 3.0 im letzten Monat erheblich verändert. An dieser Stelle ein persönlicher Überblick auf meinen sich synchronisierten Abgleich zwischen Desktop OS und iPhone für alles was sich ‘Nachrichten’ schimpft. NetNewsWire in seiner aktuellsten Beta 3.2b11 liefert 235 RSS-Feeds ins Haus. Die neue Synchronisation mit dem Google Reader schlug beim ersten Versuch gleich einmal ordentlich fehl und ersetzte mir alle lokalen Feeds durch die fünf – auf Google eingetragenen – Blog-Abos. Das hatte seine Vorteile, weil dadurch ein unverhoffter Sommerputz ins Haus stand. Von 350 Weblog-Abos des Backups, konnte ich auf die besagten 235 einzelnen Seiten herunterkürzen. Diesmal gab es kein Erbarmen und alle RSS-Feeds ohne Volltext, die rigoros einen Abgang machten. Die Anordnung fällt mit 13 Hauptordner übersichtlich aus. iPhone developers have often struggled to make sense of Apple's iPhone app store approval process. A recent rejection of Instapaper Pro ($9.99 from iTunes)--a tool that saves Web pages for reading later--is just as baffling. The app has already been available in the store as both a free (iTunes link) and a paid app, but the latest 1.4 version was denied by Apple. According to the author of the app, Marco Arment, Instapaper Pro 1.4 was rejected because of the "middle icon" in the graphic below. Arment writes on his Web site that the iPhone-like icon was designed by Joshua Keay for FileMagnet (iTunes link) and was "generously offered to me for Instapaper 1.4". Great update! Just downloaded and I have been messing around with it on the new iPad for last 10 min! Love the new fullscreen mode (finally), new gestures with swiping (finally), and the twilight sepia (I do wish we could have an option to set to sepia during the day though!) and obviously retina graphics!! D#%$ good job Marco! I still think instapaper is by far the best of them all, especially with this update! It blows readability & RIL out of the water! Also, with the latest update to the mobilizer, which gave us dark and sepia themes….it's great service period! Keep up great work!

I take the bus and BART to get to work, and AT&T is notoriously bad in San Francisco. All I have to do in the morning is fly through my RSS feeds, adding anything that looks interesting to Instapaper. All of those stories get downloaded to my iPhone by the time I walk to the bus stop and I don't need to worry about the network at all from then. Totally worth the $5!

If you're considering buying this app, you should. I started on the Free version, which after using, I wanted to buy the Pro version just to thank Marco for the great app. After getting the Pro version, I grew into the added functionality and now wouldn't go back.
New features, like pagination, text/spacing options, and more all seem like solid upgrades. Plus, the developer has the good taste to strip out features that people weren't using as the app evolves. He's got the same good taste that many of us appreciate in Apple products (although the app isn't as graphically divine as an Apple product, you won't care, you'll be engrossed in reading, which is a sign of a quality interface).
Buy it.

I bought Instapaper Pro when I bought my first iPhone, and as an editor in publishing, I use this application not only for my daily use but also to illustrate how reading can indeed be furthered in the digital age.
I will not hold my rating hostage, so five stars it is. But please return graphical mode to Instapaper Pro. In addition to reducing its functionality to the free version, a business strategy that I do not understand, V2.2 suffers from two significant flaws:
1. What about saving web pages where offline graphical fidelity is useful (not necessarily text but things like receipts, forms, etc.)?
2. Text mode alone eliminates the graphic design of the article and thus eliminates a part of its unique voice and message. Is there not worth in the designs of Massimo Vignelli for the New Yorker, Milton Glaser for New York Magazine, or even the utilitarian groupthink of Wikipedia? And is the conformity produced by functions like text mode alone not what Edward Tufte warned about in his analysis of the numbing sameness produced by Microsoft PowerPoint?
Mr. Arment, please return graphical mode to InstaPaper Pro and return your application to its former if not its greater glory. If it is a matter of server traffic and space or even opportunity cost, please make graphical mode an in-app purchase, and I will gladly continue to support your work.

I can't say enough about Instapaper. I was a little skeptical at first about reading articles with Instapaper instead of just using the websites, but the way Instapaper organizes your articles and presents them without ads is the absolute most perfect way to read an article.
That, alone, is worth the $5.
Then the developer adds amazing usability features like tilt-scroll and the new pagination to make reading that much more practical.

Graphical mode was the main reason I bought this software. I don't understand why the dev had to remove it... was it broken? Was it too hard to support? Or, like the update description said, user surveys indicated it was not a popular feature. Well, no one asked me, that's for sure.
I spend an hour every day of the week underground, on the subway, and have relied on Instapaper to be my "connection" underground. Without graphical mode, this software is now useless to me. What was once 5 star software in my book is now 1.
Graphic mode is gone. So is the value.

Instapaper is an essential part of managing and consuming content for the web. Can't read it right now? Don't keep 32 windows and 121 tabs open. Add to Instapaper and read it later on either your desktop/laptop or iPhone. Also de-clutters the text so you can, you know, actually read it. And 2.0 is even better. Marco is one of those rare developers who keeps coming out with stuff that not only works well, but looks great and gets the heck out of your way when you're trying to use it (Tumblr, anyone?). Well done, and well worth the wait.

This is one of the most used apps on my phone. I use the bookmarklet in safari on my mac and add pages while I am working. When I am in transit on the metro I always have great reading material. Tilt scrolling is excellent. Marco deserves major praise for this app.
As of 2.0 the app got even better. The social features are a nice touch, but background updating is the real addition for me. My one request: a way to know if a folder is empty. A colour change or an article count would do the trick.

Awesome app - I use it daily on the way to & back from work on the train on my iPod Touch. Very simple to use & it expoits the iPod screen to the max! Small teething problems (crashes, updates that wipe off currently saved articles) still persist, but they are only slight annoyances.

I downloaded Instapaper Free and loaded up my iPod with a bunch of "read later" material before going on a business trip. Two articles into my flight, it was clear that buying the Pro version was a no-brainer. Instapaper works flawlessly and truly transforms the experience of reading online content. I absolutely love being able to so easily flag things via a bookmarklet on any of my machines or my iPod, sync, and take it on the road. This is one of the most useful and practical applications I have. I often want to read articles that I see on the Web, but don't want to sit at the computer to do so. With this program you can read when you want, without being connected through Wifi. The Pro version saves your space so you can resume an article exactly where you left off. This app has completely changed the way I read online articles. In the past, I used to accumulate a backlog of dozens of tabs in Firefox and NetNewsWire--for days or weeks at a time--but now I send all significant articles to Instapaper and I read them on the subway. The tilt-scrolling is fantastic for one-handed operation on a crowded New York subway car!

I read a lot online, and I wanted a way to store articles to "read later" that I could access easily from my computers and my iPhone. Instapaper works great for this. I used the free version for a week, then recently upgraded to the paid version. I find tilt scrolling amazingly convenient, and being able to remember my position in a page quite useful.

I have to say, without the shadow of doubt, that this application has been very useful. I subscribe to a ton of feeds and since I'm never able to read every article while at work, I generally clip them to this service and read them later, when I have more down time. Once I've read the article I can either A, save it to Evernote for my online reference or, B, delete it and find more articles to add to my paper. The developer really listens to our emarks and understands what makes a great app. Simplicity of design and usability are fantastic!

I bought this in the hope that it would fix the one big problem with the free version--When the iPhone is tilted on its side, it switches to landscape view. This wouldn't be a problem if that didn't jump you back to the top of the page. If you are halfway through a long article, you are stuck flicking your way back to where you were.
Tilt scroll is nice, but would be nicer if it were varible speed. One of the problems with the iPhone is that there is no easy way to quickly move through a long document. It's: flick, flick, flick, flick... If the speed of the scrolling increased with the pitch of the tilt, it would help overcome this shortcoming.

To me this is the one iPhone app I can't live without. It's changed my article reading workflow. I now batch up the articles I wish to read from my RSS feeds and save them to Instapaper for offline reading wherever I happen to have a few free minutes. No lag waiting for the slow data connection or need to navigate to different sites.
I would have paid $10 for the free version. Having the added features in the Pro version is like a bonus. That being said, the ability to save your place in an article in between sessions is worth the incremental cost of the Pro app.

I usually find the most intriguing short reading material at the time and in the place when I'm least able to actually do the reading: when I'm at work in my office. Being able to bookmark these reading items and read them offline later when I have a spare moment, then, is hugely useful. This is an elegantly simple application that does very little but does it perfectly. And because what it does is so useful, it's actually one of the best reasons to own an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Tilt scrolling must be reactivated for each article via a button at the bottom of the screen. At first this seemed tedious: why must I keep turning on this wonderful feature? Then I realized that every time you hit the button, Instapaper resets the zero point for scrolling, thus accommodating the iPhone's new position as you slouch ever lower in your chair. This flawlessly implemented interface feature will surely attract Apple's attention and find its way into the iPhone OS. Well done, Mr. Arment.

I really loved instapaper free and I was more than happy to pay for instapaper pro for its new tilt scrolling feature. I love it. I use Instapaper more than I use safari on my phone when the network is slow. quick tip: when a url is loaded in safari I quickly bookmark "read later" and then view the webpage in instapaper for "reading now"

I first started using Instapaper when Marco released it as a web app. It's simplicity was intriguing, and it quickly became an essential part of my daily workflow. When the iPhone came out, I used the web version from it, not realizing there was a true app available. A quick search one day made me very happy when I found the free version. It's great. Then I found the Pro version. Easily the best $9.99 I've spent on iPhone apps. The ability to read web sites offline (I have horrid AT&T coverage where I live) made the Pro version a must have. To borrow from the NRA, you can have my Instapaper Pro when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

I've been a huge fan of Instapaper Free for a while now. Rather than speed through an article to quickly get back to work, click the Instapaper favelet in your browser toolbar to save it for later reading. Instapaper Pro added the feature I missed in the Free, the ability to email articles to friends. Well worth the $10, but try the Free version first!

I'm very pleased with Instapaper Pro and use it everyday. Last week we were on vacation in Maine. Usually I pack several books, but this time I just saved a lot of interesting material via Instapaper and when there was down time, I just pulled out my iPhone. Another benefit, since our hotel charged for wireless access and I chose not to pay for it out of spite, was to click on articles linked by emails I've subscribed to, then click on Read Later and let the Instapaper web page download it (in other words NOT wait for the web page to load on my iPhone via AT&T). Then later, after saving several articles, I hit Update in the Instapaper app and put the iPhone down and let the app load my iPhone while I did something else for awhile. According to the Instapaper Blog, Marco intends to make text only the default update to the iPhone, which will make this process even speedier and more useful to someone without a wifi connection.

It did for me, anyway. For years, I'd have the same old system. An interesting article comes into my feed reader, gets opened in my browser to be read later, and eventually gets lost in a browser crash, or gets culled a few weeks down the line when I have too many tabs open. With Instapaper, I actually read things! Open an article, hit the bookmarklet, and the peice is ready for me to read on my iPhone during my daily commute.
