ParkMadison Press and TouchBooks Reader are offering David Carnoy's novel KNIFE MUSIC as a free download to demonstrate the future of ebooks on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

---------------------------------------------

A doctor defends himself from an all-too-plausible rape allegation in this scalpel-sharp medical thriller.

When 17-year-old Kristen Kroiter, a former patient, kills herself after penning a diary entry describing a sexual encounter with him, hotshot emergency-room surgeon Ted Cogan faces an uphill battle to clear his name.

Kristen had indeed spent the night at his home when she washed up there drunk after a frat party. Cogan had been drinking a little too, and Kristen's best friend swears she saw them in bed together. Anyone who knows him can imagine the 40-something Cogan, a notorious womanizer with an eye for college girls, in the scenario.

For detective Hank Madden of the Menlo Park, Calif., police department, that--along with a personal animus stemming from his traumatic past--is enough to charge Cogan with statutory rape and manslaughter. It's also enough to draw readers into this subtle and engrossing mystery.

As Cogan struggles to reconstruct that night's events, first-time novelist Carnoy paints a landscape of complex, flawed characters, mixed motives and twisting intrigue. He takes readers into the toxic office politics of a hospital surgery department, the rancid machinations of a frat house full of horny kids on the make and the romantic fantasies of young girls, fueled by a volatile mixture of innocence and desire.

Tautly paced and full of crisp dialogue, Carnoy's prose is pitch-perfect whether delving into medical and police procedural or sussing out the nuances of campus hookup culture. In Cogan, he's concocted an appealing, edgy protagonist--cocksure, arrogant and abrasive towards his less competent colleagues and "difficult" patients, but possessed of a roguish charm that makes readers want to tag along, even if they're not sure where his moral compass is pointing.

A gripping thriller debut that is just what the doctor ordered.

Creative's D200 plays big for a small Bluetooth speaker
Mini_discussion_bubble CNET iPhone Atlas - Posted Fri, 02 Jul 2010 15:07:00 UTC +00:00
Creative is hitching its wagon to Bluetooth in its bid to differentiate itself in this crowded speaker accessory category and is in the process of releasing several Bluetooth-enabled iPod speaker options, including the D200 ($130). There really isn't a whole lot to this speaker. It's rather compact, measuring 3.9 inches high by 15.9 inches wide by 3.7 inches deep, and has a nice heft to it, weighing in at 3.6 pounds. Unlike the wraparound speaker grille of its step-up sibling, the $300 ZiiSound D5, this model only has cloth on the front of the unit, covering the speaker drivers. The speaker shell has a nice, glossy black finish that, as you might expect, is something of a fingerprint magnet (yes you will find yourself polishing this speaker with a cloth from time to time). From a distance, the speaker looks simple and understated, much like a small center-channel speaker in a Read More
Compact with a kick: Creative's ZiiSound D5 Bluetooth speaker
Mini_discussion_bubble CNET iPhone Atlas - Posted Fri, 02 Jul 2010 13:43:57 UTC +00:00
The ZiiSound D5 is a higer-end Bluetooth speaker that retails for $300. As the iPhone-iPod audio docking systems move into a more mature phase, Creative is hitching its wagon to Bluetooth in a bid to differentiate itself in this crowded category. Bluetooth compatibility allows the wide range of A2DP devices--which includes iPhones, iPads, recent iPod Touch models, most recent smartphones, and many PCs--to stream audio wirelessly to the speaker. On the PC speaker side, Creative has the $130 Inspire S2 Bluetooth system, and now the company has bulked up its audio line with several Bluetooth-enabled iPod speaker options, including the ZiiSound D5, a higher-end model that retails for $300. The nice thing about the ZiiSound D5 is that it's pretty compact, measuring 3.5 inches high by 16.7 inches wide by 4.3 inches deep, with a low profile that's well suited for shelf placement. The attractively designed speaker has nice heft (8.4 Read More
How long should your iPhone last?
Mini_discussion_bubble CNET iPhone Atlas - Posted Wed, 30 Jun 2010 21:54:44 UTC +00:00
How long before you really need to upgrade your smartphone? Let me start by saying that I bought my iPhone 3GS in October of last year and have no plans to upgrade to the iPhone 4. Luckily, while the new iPhone--antenna issues aside--has certainly been enhanced, the differences between the new model and my "old" 3GS aren't huge, especially now that I've installed iOS4. However, even if there was a big difference, I knew going in that I would largely be ignoring whatever next-generation model Apple put out because I'm not a serial upgrader. But recently I've been thinking about how long a phone (and not just an iPhone) should last. The common consensus I've heard from cell phone manufacturers is about two years, even if some carriers allow you to upgrade every 12 months (at a subsidized price), depending on your plan. With my old phone, the Sprint Mogul, which Read More

Great book! I loved it! Didn't see the twist at the end! But I felt really sorry for Klein. I mean the description of him crying was almost painful for me to read.
Great read
CruleToBeKind 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I actually have read the print version of the book and contrary to what some people are saying very, very little was changed. No scenes were cut or modified. I think the developer said that to get the book through. Print version is $16 on Amazon, so this is a bargain at zilch. May not be quite the same experience as reading a p-book, but I was surprised at how well it read on the iPhone's screen.
Let us not set a precedent

If individuals can download music and movies with explicit content why does Apple feel the need to censor the written word?
No curse words...
nufsaid865 3.0 stars Version: 1
its a sham apple made david take out the 'objectional content' would have been better if it was the ORIGINAL content of the book!
Surprisingly good
AntiKate 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
- and considering the genre - much better than expected. Good character development, interesting plot (if somewhat predictable), a few medical "huh?"s - but altogether not too bad.

This is a great read and the application works really well. I would like to see the default setting for rotation turned on (right now you have to go into settings to make it work.) Also the scaling of the font should be in real time so you can see what size you will get. But the story itself is excellent and certainly worth the download.
First book downloaded to my iPhone
Joy Miller 5.0 stars Version: 1
After a few chapters I've just decided to just pick up a copy at Amazon - I guess I still prefer to read printed pages. At least with this I got to download a free copy, read the first few chapters before buying the book. From what I've gotten to so far, it's very well written.
Gripping
B.Dunnam 5.0 stars Version: 1
This book will keep you reading through to the very end. Carnot dies a good job of weaving in hints yet still surprising the reader. Definitely worth a read.
Graphic, but worth the read!
Green Submariner 5.0 stars Version: 1
This is graphic, but truly worth the read. It grasps you at the beginning and drags you through to the end. You feel like you have a million cuts, bruises and skinned knees; but at the end of it, it's simply worth it.
Great

I sat and read this book all day. What a great story! I also liked the adjustable auto-scroll feature.
Writting at it's finest.
Dominique Haftmann 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is one of the most captivating books I have ever read. I spent a whole night reading it from around chapter 30 to the end, I just couldn't put this amazingly wrtitten piece if art down. This book is truly 44 chapters of pure bliss. The author is amazing at his knowledge of medicine and attention to details. There however where a few typos and gramatical errors, but who's complaining? Fantastic book I would highly reccomend anyone/everyone to download this book and best of all it's free. The ending also has an incredible twist that you won't see comming until the last three paragraphs. Stunningly great read, download it it's more than worth it, I could see myself paying for the uneditted version from Amazon and I'm not too big on paying for books I have already read..
Kinda sad story but i Liked it
