Magellan updates Roadmate for iPhone with new interface and free 'lifetime' map updates
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Fri, 17 Jun 2011 22:15:00 UTC +00:00
Magellan has pushed out a rather massive and free update to iPhone Roadmate users. The entire engine and user interface have been freshened up and greatly improved (to my taste, that is). Yelp! and Google search are included, and the app has added personalization features to the display, including arrival time, distance to destination, and your speed. The update is free for current users, and the USA version of RoadMate sells for US $34.99. The North American version is $54.99. In a quick test of the app I found it functioned smoothly, and I like the addition of lane assist and Google searching. One thing to note is that Magellan defines 'lifetime' updates for maps and traffic data as "the life of the product or 3 years, whichever is reached first, or until Magellan no longer receives relevant map and traffic data." That's not that long, but it's better than no Read More

App Showdown: TomTom vs. Navigon
Mini_discussion_bubble Mac|Life - Posted Tue, 14 Dec 2010 17:50:12 UTC +00:00
Posted 12/14/2010 at 9:50am | by Matthew Tilmann As blizzards and the like bear down on the nation, sometimes traveling can get a little dicey, and it can be easy to lose where you're at.  Granted, you could probably just pull over and open a map, but why not let your iPhone do that for you?  We highlight two apps that are the leaders, Navigon's MobileNavigator North America, and TomTom's U.S. & Canada app. Before we get going, when it comes to GPS apps, one of the largest questions most have is, "how much is this gonna cost me?" As of the time of this writing, Navigon and TomTom are both at $59.99 USD.  Let's get driving! When Navigon's app first came out, many were leery of it, because of the fact that Navigon's portable devices came to an abrupt halt in the US, so many wondered if the app would Read More

Magellan Updates GPS Apps for iOS 4, Now Includes Free Traffic
Mini_discussion_bubble Mac|Life - Posted Fri, 19 Nov 2010 13:07:27 UTC +00:00
Posted 11/19/2010 at 5:07am | by J.R. Bookwalter They may be late to the party, but Magellan has finally updated their RoadMate GPS apps for iOS 4, complete with multitasking, fast app switching, uninterrupted navigation while on phone calls and free traffic data. Magellan’s RoadMate GPS apps have been sorely lacking in usability since iOS 4 came onto the scene, but that’s all changed this week as the company made up for lost time with a fresh 1.3 update that gets the company on par with competitors such as TomTom and CoPilot Live. New to Magellan RoadMate is iOS 4 support, which means multitasking and fast application switching as well as uninterrupted navigation while on phone calls and continued voice guidance while you’re using another app. Other GPS apps on the iPhone have had this for months now, so it’s good to see that Magellan has gotten caught up. While their Read More

Magellan has worthy contender in the GPS sweepstakes
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 25 Nov 2009 22:00:00 UTC +00:00
Just in time for the holidays! I was excited when Magellan announced a new iPhone GPS software product, and was eager to get it downloaded to test. I spent two days driving around (well, not the whole 2 days) and generally had a positive experience. Magellan has been around the GPS business for a long time, delivering the first GPS handheld unit back in 1989. They also pioneered the Neverlost system in Hertz rental cars. The company has a lot of experience getting travelers to their destinations on vacations, business trips, and for the holidays. They've put quite a lot in this first version for the iPhone which they call the Magellan Roadmate 2010. It sells for US $79.99 [iTunes link] for a 'limited time', then it goes back to $99.99, and it's a 1.36GB download. The app has text to speech, lane assist, iPod control, and a pedestrian mode, which Read More
Navigon Celebrates Thanksgiving Early With A MobileNavigator North America Sale
Mini_discussion_bubble Apple iPhone Apps - Posted Fri, 20 Nov 2009 19:40:26 UTC +00:00
With Magellan and TomTom getting all of the attention lately, Navigon no doubt wanted to shift your focus back to their high quality iPhone navigation app.  The best way to accomplish such a task is to have a sale, and that’s exactly what they are doing. Navigon’s MobileNavigator North America will be priced at $69.99, a full $20.00 below its regular price, from now until November 30th.  MobileNavigator‘s new Traffic Live feature will also be on sale for $14.99 during that time, which is $5.00 below its launch price.  That puts MobileNavigator North America well below TomTom US & Canada‘s price of $99.99, and slightly below Magellan RoadMate‘s price of $79.99. If you would like to learn more about MobileNavigator North America, check out our in-depth review.  We also have a review available for MobileNavigator‘s Traffic Live in-app purchase. If you plan on traveling a lot during the holidays and need Read More
Magellan car kit detailed at FCC filing
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 18 Nov 2009 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
That was fast. We just learned Magellan was going to offer a car kit for the iPhone and it has already hit the FCC. GPSTracklog.com has a detailed drawing of the new device, and it looks to be quite complete. Magellan has said the kit will be on sale before the end of the year, and even give the iPod touch full nav capabilities. The car kit is supposed to allow any iPhone GPS app to work with it, so you're not limited to the Magellan app. It works in portrait or landscape mode, and has a speaker for hearing directions and also link to your iPhone for Bluetooth based calls. The Magellan Roadmate app itself [iTunes link] has a boatload of good features, and we're anxious to get our hands on the app for a full test. Holiday travelers will have a lot of good choices for navigating to your Read More

Magellan Car Kit To Bring Turn-By-Turn To iPod Touch
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhone Alley - Posted Wed, 18 Nov 2009 04:22:13 UTC +00:00
Yesterday we told you about Magellan’s new turn-by-turn navigation app, RoadMate 2010 North America [App Store, $79.99], the latest in a long line of navigation apps. You might also be interested to know that they have an upcoming car kit similar to TomTom’s. Unlike theirs, both Magellan’s app and car kit will work on the iPod touch and non-GPS iPhones, being the first solution to bring turn-by-turn GPS to the non-GPS Apple handhelds. Edit: blein01 just let us know in the comments that Dual Electronics has a device that will bring GPS to the iPod touch and original iPhone by the end of November, sooner than the Magellan car kit is due to strike. Thanks, blein01! Features: If you’re interested, you can have them notify you as soon as it’s available here. Categories: News  Tags: power Read More

App of the Week: Navigation as Heavy on Show as Go
Mini_discussion_bubble NYTimes Gadgetwise Blog - Posted Tue, 17 Nov 2009 23:33:26 UTC +00:00
I’ll admit that I have been less than impressed by recent offerings from the GPS maker Magellan. But all is forgiven. Magellan’s new RoadMate iPhone app is the easiest to use I’ve tried, and it has the sort of graphics that you usually see on a dashtop GPS. What makes it easy to use are two features, one called QuickSpell, a very good typing recognition program, and SmartCity, which reduces the number of clicks needed to program a destination. Another feature you don’t normally see on iPhone navigation is highway lane assistance. The screen shows not only the road you’re on, but the highway signs you’ll see, and indicates which lane you should be in. That helps keep you from missing exits and getting forced into turn-only lanes. RoadMate for the iPhone also shows renderings of landmark buildings in a mode called 3-D plus. In my downtown I was able to Read More
Magellan kondigt iPhone-carkit met gps-ontvanger en speaker aan
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhoneclub.nl - Posted Tue, 17 Nov 2009 19:17:38 UTC +00:00

Magellan Sends Its Eldest Child Into the iPhone Turn-By-Turn App War, Tearfully [IPhone Apps]
Mini_discussion_bubble Gizmodo - Posted Mon, 16 Nov 2009 21:34:09 UTC +00:00
In this war there are two battles: the polite, traditional fight between expensive, full-featured apps like Navigon and TomTom, and the I-will-undercut-you-if-it-means-killing-my-own-mother gorefest of the cheaper apps, like MotionX and Gokivo. With RoadMate, Magellan has taken the road less bloody. Debuting at $80 (and presumably climbing to $100 later), RoadMate recreates as much of the Magellan dedicated PND experience as possible, which means the interface is a full conversion—there's very little in the way of iPhone-ness here, even down to a replacement keyboard. In addition, it falls on the conservative side of the map storage debate, holding its data locally—great for when you might be in a bad service area, but not so great if you don't want to set aside 1.3GB of space for an app. The rest of the feature list is appropriate to the price: spoken street names, simulated lane guidance, 3D landmarks, in-app music controls and address Read More
Magellan enters the iPhone nav app sweepstakes
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Mon, 16 Nov 2009 22:00:00 UTC +00:00
I guess it was inevitable. Magellan has just launched an iPhone app that looks great and will offer road warriors even more choice in a very competitive landscape. The Magellan Roadmate 2010 North America is being offered for a 'limited time' for U.S. 79.99. [iTunes link] The 1.36 GB app includes the usual features plus text-to-speech for pronouncing street names, a car finding feature for when you park, pedestrian mode, lane assist, 3D landmarks, in-app music control, address book integration and an intuitive one touch menu system. With the Magellan offering, all the big navigation companies have a cell phone product. TomTom is on the iPhone along with Navigon, and Garmin has a cell phone/ nav app hardware solution that hasn't exactly caught on fire with consumers. Then there is the 'will it or won't it appear on the iPhone' Google app. Also interesting is that Magellan has announced a Premium Read More

Magellan RoadMate 2010 North America Hits The App Store, Premium Car Kit Coming Soon

Magellan, another major player in the standalone GPS device market, has decided to jump on the iPhone bandwagon with their recently released Magellan RoadMate 2010 North America. Magellan RoadMate 2010 North America hits the App Store nearly full-featured, unlike some of the other turn-by-turn GPS apps out there.  It features the same interface used in Magellan’s standalone GPS devices, along with a OneTouch favorites menu, text-to-speech, lane assist, address book integration, in-app music control, QuickSpell address entry with SmartCity Search, and NAVTEQ maps. The app also contains some helpful features for when you are not in your vehicle, including the ability to save your parking location and a Pedestrian Mode.  Pedestrian Mode is able to give you walking directions to your location of choice.
