Favorite Four: Tax Season Apps
Mini_discussion_bubble 148 Apps - Posted Fri, 13 Apr 2012 13:30:18 UTC +00:00
By Kevin Stout on April 13th, 2012 Take a look at our favorite four apps for taxes and finance. It’s coming down to the time for us procrastinators to either suck it up and do our taxes or file an extension. Taxes, and finance in general, are not the most exciting of tasks. And on a yearly basis, I seem to wait until the last minute to get this done (just did mine today). When taxes and finance are put into app form, they can be a little less boring. Check out our four favorite tax season apps for taxes and generally being in a better mood about finance and budgeting. Tax Receipt Log: The most important thing about finance apps is speed and organization. Tax Receipt Log makes the process of saving receipts both quick and organized. How Developers Are Optimizing Apps For the iPad's Retina Display
Mini_discussion_bubble ReadWriteWeb - Posted Sat, 17 Mar 2012 00:45:41 UTC +00:00
Well, today is the big day. Diehard Apple fans around the world are either enduring endless lines or eagerly awaiting the UPS truck from the comfort of their own home. They're all doing the same thing: Pulling open that pristine, white packaging to reveal the latest coveted gadget from Apple's overseas factories: the new iPad. Apple isn't the only one that's been busily prepping for today. App developers everywhere have been recoding and resubmitting their work to the iTunes App Store to take advantage of the new device's specs. More than anything else, it's the iPad's super-high resolution retina display that's giving developers the most compelling reason to push out an update. With its resolution of 2048 x 1536, the iPad's retina display can make even the most well-designed apps look dramatically better. The screen, as Tim Cook proudly pointed out, has 1 million more pixels than an HDTV set. Naturally, Read More

Apparently Walmart will be selling them in just a few short hours, well before Apple itself does tomorrow morning. Meanwhile, the first direct-to-consumer shipments should be hitting anytime now. Posted 02/29/2012 at 12:41pm | by AJ Dellinger There are few feelings that will make a person's heart drop quicker than the dreaded swipe of the credit card that is met with a message of "Declined." If you're used to managing your budget the traditional way, you no doubt have a filing cabinet full of unorganized bank statements, pre-approved loan offers, and receipts that you can't recall why you saved. (Did you really need to make a whole "Bagels" folder for that one time you bought a single bagel?) While there are a plethora of financial management tools available for your iOS device, no one has yet to come close to the Mint.com Personal Finance app. The main purpose of the app is simple: Make managing your money easy. This was a massive undertaking, with 25 separate categories all requiring their own nominations and voting from our readers. We've learned some lessons for next year's event -- start earlier, watch for astroturfing in the nominations, drop some unpopular categories -- and the Best of 2012 will be even better. The editorial staff here at TUAW agreed with many of the reader picks, but we had our own opinions on some others. We want to thank all of the thousands of TUAW readers who took time to consider their favorite accessories and apps, nominate them for an award, and then vote in the competition. Personal Finance Service HelloWallet Launches On iPhone

Mint competitor HelloWallet is launching on the iPhone today, with an application that provides at-a-glance spending guidance, budget details and your available cash balance. As a company, HelloWallet aims to differentiate itself from Mint by functioning as a full-service financial advisor, in addition to being a personal finance tracking application. On mobile, this aspect to its service shows up under the “Next Steps” section, which offers users personalized advice and tips. By Jennifer Allen on November 2nd, 2011 Personal finances are now much easier to manage on the iPad thanks to this app. Mint.com is a service that I wish would come over to the British shores. For now though, I’ll just gaze longingly at how the already excellent personal finance app has now been optimized for the iPad and improved upon. Built with the iPad and iOS5 in mind (which is now a requirement to install Mint.com Personal Finance), the overview screen has been redesigned so that users can quickly get a snapshot of their finances as well as the latest alerts and bill reminders. Cash and pending transactions can be entered to ensure the most accurate view of the user’s finances, plus detailed transactions are viewable. Mint.com iPad app finally hits the App Store
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 26 Oct 2011 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
The wait for Mint.com's iPad app is finally over. Today Mint's parent company Intuit unveiled its iPad app, and while many of us would have preferred to have it sooner it proves the old adage "good things come to those who wait." Last week I got a exclusive sneak peek of the app and I can tell you that out of all the websites that have made the browser-to-iPad leap, Mint is the one that has done it most successfully. Founded in 2006, Mint.com was one of the first fiscal information sites that acknowledged a simple fact: most people just want one easy-to-view dashboard to see all their financial accounts at a glance. Mint.com achieved this through aggregating checking, credit card, and loan accounts and presenting them to users in a beautiful UI. Mint was so successful in achieving its goals, personal financial software powerhouse Intuit bought the company in 2009. Read More

In the note above, found on Mint's GetSatisfaction support forum, Mint Customer Advocacy Director Stephen Mann notes that they can't confirm any dates yet and are asking Mint users to "please hold on for just a little while longer." Mint's free iPhone app has been extremely popular with users, with a 4.5-star rating for the current version on the App Store. The company is part of Intuit, and its web-based app is known for excellent budgeting and automatic categorization functions. Read More

While Mint's iPhone app was always quite good, this new version brings a number of new features to the app that make it more useful and, most importantly, more secure. The new features include the ability to edit transactions on the phone, mobile access to Mint's newly enhanced budgeting features, and the app can now also receive push alerts which can be customized on the service's website. One new aspect of the app that users will definitely appreciate is the extra layer of security that Mint has now added. Users can now specify a passcode that will keep others from opening the app even if they have access to the phone. In addition, the application now automatically exits whenever a user receives a call or text message. Overall, Read More

Still needs UI tweak
David R. Greenberg 4.0 stars Version: 2.3
After many iterations, Mint still cuts off the Investments number at the bottom of the main overview screen. There's plenty of excess white space to allow everything to be seen at a glance without scrolling, so why does this flaw persist? In the meantime, Advice, almost always useless or empty, takes up some of this space.
I don't understand
Kkenn247 4.0 stars Version: 2.3
I've been using mint now for a checkbook replacement for a few months and have been very pleased with the iPhone and PC versions. I just don't understand how I can see available balance for both of these versions but not on the iPad version. I had high hopes for the latest update. The app is useless to me without this feature. Why is it not there?
the update is great
tag81818181 5.0 stars Version: 2.3
you can drill down into your budgets now, much better
Awesome App for iPhone
RVeloso 5.0 stars Version: 2.3
Must have app to keep track of all your finances while on the go. Does not have all the functionality of the full site, but has enough for you to monitor your spending/budget and account balances while away from home.
Slow
bobluck 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
Data is fine, but very slow to update on both iPhone and web site.
Needs iPad version
Seraphknight76 3.0 stars Version: 1.7.2
Works on the iPad ok, but was obviously made for the iPhone not the iPad. Needs an iPad version that actually fits the whole screen, has better resolution, and utilizes the larger screen for more information. Other than that, the app is great.
Meh... Lame
Happytrees 1.0 stars Version: 1.5.70
No cash accounts you must give mint your account info to even try the app. Pass
Mostly great
Wackabee12 4.0 stars Version: 1.4
I'd just like to be able to edit my budgets from the app rather than only online.
Good app
JD Bloke 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
Changed my rating from 2 to 4 stars as the update does increase the speed of updates. Mint also listens to feedback and makes improvements based on it. Keep up the good work!
Great app, but new quirk
Tboehmer 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
I've been using this app for about 6 or 7 months now and have always enjoyed it, especially after the last large update. However, the new update includes the property and stuff you've added, which is great. Unfortunately they add this up to the total amount of money you have across all acounts, which really doesn't make any sense. So now I could easily spend too much on my credit cards ad still think I have enough money to pay for it. There should be a separate total including the property you've added, or at the very least a setting to disable it. Great app otherwise :-)
Awesome App

Nice
KKENN 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Add manual transactions with transaction matching and it'll steal the show... I need a "real balance" / pending and future transactions...
A fantastic app for a fantastic website
doc-guy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this app. I was searching the app store last week looking for an app that would integrate with mint.com and couldn't find anything. Now, here is an app from Mint that shows you all your transactions, balances, budgets, investment balances and more, and like Mint.com, it is free. I am very pleased with this app and think that you will be too. It is an absolute must for all mint.com users!
Poor customer service
WyPhotog 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I've been trying to add my bank account for two weeks, to no avail. It is listed in Mint's directory, but my bank recently updated their Web site and their login URL has changed. Mint has the old login URL. After three emails over two weeks trying to inform Mint of this problem I have received NO RESPONSE other than the automated response indicating the receipt of my email.
Ugh! It's crap!
Aquajosh 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Although it seems like a really great program there are a couple of things people should be aware of. 1). Many people, myself included, have complained that the program does not give accurate, "current" balance results. You are better off logging into your bank account or calling your bank if you really want or need to know your balance to avoid overdrafts or whatever. YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS. 2). Reporting a problem takes you to a forum where you can see many other people complaining of and asking for an update, response to or assistance to the same problem....hello? Anybody out there reading these? Bottom line....until it can update your true balance save yourself the time and frustration. As for me? I give it 1 star for now. If my balance isn't accurate the program is worthless.
Good start, can't wait for v2!!!
Bootsybus 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice interface, good for the basics. Can't wait till you can tag transactions. 5 stars for a beta effort. There's a lot of built up goodwill in 2 of those stars! :-)
Go get it
Strav22 5.0 stars Version: 1.0

Very handy

Really handy for getting a quick overview of your financial status. Even without the app, the website is great :)
Great App

I haven't written any reviews yet but this one deserved some attention. Simple version of the great online application. Check it out if you care about your finances!
Great work guys!!!
Gandalf White 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been using Mint for the past few months and found it to be extremely useful in tracking my spending habits. I love the SMS alerts too - it helps me pay bills on time, and keep tabs on fraudulent activity.
Good supplement to a great website.
So It's Come To This: 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
First, I have to say that Mint.com is a great website. It's a good way to manage your finances but apply some automation to it to keep it simple. I think they took a similarly simple approach when making this app; it downloads the overviews, transactions, and alerts from the main site but nothing more than that - and that's a good thing. Its easy for such a powerful website to overload you with features that, on the iPhone, would be cumbersome to manage. Its clear they focused on developing a good app that gives you the information you need without adding unneeded complexities.
Quick access to balances & budgets
Prince Duke 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Mint let's me track my checking, credit card, and investment balances while on the go. It's great when out shopping or figuring out if I can afford to buy dinner for friends - just hit the "refresh" button and I see my real time balances accross all my accounts. I think they support something like 8,000 banks. Awesome!
A Great Start
marshallbock 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a big fan of using Mint's web app to track my financial accounts, and I've long been quietly hoping they'd make a native app for my iPhone. So for me, this was definitely a welcome arrival to the App Store. If a few more features are added in a future update, it'll get 5 Stars from me, but I still give it a respectable 4 Stars in its current incarnation.
Super useful, one gripe
Kevin Conner 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The website is excellent and this app is a great way to check up on how you're doing this month. Especially for bad spenders like me. :) But the data is sensitive. Much, much more sensitive than anything else on my phone! So while I understand their suggestion that I passcode-lock my entire phone, that's wasteful of my time because I only use this once a day or so. And logging out every use is a hassle too, because I would have to type my full login info when I run the app. Instead, i'd like a setting that remembers my username but not my password. That way when I run the app it can ask for my password only, and I would also have the opportunity to login as a different user. It should not show me my username though as that is also sensitive. And when I quit the app or sleep my phone, it doesn't logout, but I do have to enter my password to get at my data again. That would earn 5 stars from me. Please mark this post as helpful if you agree with this feature request. Thanks!
Quick Fast Imformation
IANternet 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I logged in and it quickly downloaded my information. It is also secure, prompting at login and logout. Mint definitely came through with this
great start
afrosaurus 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
awesome first version of an app. Gets all the basics I need for my personal finances: account balances, transactions, budgets, and alerts...can't wait to see what they have in store for v2
Amazing
Jcapz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Wow...easy to set up an account online and to have such a beautiful interface right on your phone to stay updated everywhere you go is just amazing. Very nicely put together great job!!
It is secure- multi-billion dollar companies use Yodlee security services too.
Jeff_Elucidate 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I find the review about it not being secure interesting. Both systems, either via Federated Identity Management or Yodlee, require the storage of user information and the Hash Key. In fact, if you go to the Yodlee and look at their customers, there are quite a few Multi-billion dollar businesses using them (MSN, Etrade, ScottTrade, T-Rowe Price, Fidelity, Capital One, etc.). The security measures in question are how do these types of companies handle internal security. Short of using RSA type security services (e.g. synchronized 6-digit psuedo randomly generated fobbles), then anyone with the proper security clearance can gain access, but would they have access to complete the necessary fruad.
Best iPhone Personal Finance App Available
CPA Guy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
What I love: (1) Amazingly simple UI. (2) Nearly as much info available as on their *FREE* regular web browser version. (3) Can monitor budgets / spending, cash assets vs. o/s expenses, invetments, credit card / online bill pay / ATM transaction detail. (4) Can see what types of expenses eat up the most of your money (e.g. shopping, movies, etc.) or which merchants you spend the most money at (e.g. Target, NetFlix, etc.). It's basically the full "readable" version of Mint's web version in your iPhone! I only have a few requests as they improve this app in the future: (1) Add graphs / pie charts to show comparative spending breakdown similar to the "Trends" tab online. Just a relatively simple version would work -- no need for anything fancy. It'd be a nice piece of info to see. Could have an option to see 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, or All. (2) Would be nice to edit budgets directly from the iPhone. (3) Would be nice to edit transaction details from the phone. I'm sure I'll habe more suggestions going forward, but that's all I've had time to think about at this point (...I've only really used the app for about 5 min at this point). But, I will say that this app will be a mainstay on my first iPhone page from this point forward. Goodbye, Pageonce... Once again, Mint has simplified my life by offering unmatchable personal money management software! I'd say only 4 stars because there can still be some improvements made, but overall, it's currently the best available -- by far -- and it's one of the best first version app attempts I've seen to date! So, it gets 5 stars in my book. Keep up the great work! Best Regards, Dave Sawyer, CPA
Needs PIN on the app
DavyC 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I don't want to put a pin on my phone just to keep people out of one app. Other than that the functionality is awesome!
Is it just me...
stankhoo 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
... or is anyone else out there not entirely uncomfortable giving a third party website all my bank account info and passwords? There are plenty other apps out there where I can track my expenses without giving up my sensitive info. I'd steer away from this personally.
Read the agreement (giving up your rights)
WILLDAL 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
By downloading this you are "giving up your right to have a trial by Jury" as well as many other rights to your own money. You also give Power of Attorney to Mint.com. Great interface for budgeting but you are setting yourself up for identity theft with no recourse to retrieve your money through legal dispute.
Not secure
Dcdolittle 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Mint states that they don't store your bank password. That is right. They instead give your password to yodley. And what yodley does is encrypt your password with an encryption key and store the encrypted password as well as the key in their database. It is important to note that the key has to be stored somewhere on the system since it will be needed to periodically decrypt your bank password in order to pull fresh data from your bank. Unfortunately, What this means is that a database administrator or anyone with suitable access can first read the key and then use that to decrypt your bank password. You know the rest of the story... Thank you mint... I initially thought that you were using federated identity management to avoid storing my bank passwords in any sytem. But I was wrong. I am closing my mint account.
