360iDev: Lessons from the design of Postage
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 14 Sep 2011 07:00:00 UTC +00:00
Developer Chris Parrish hosted a talk this week here at 360iDev in Denver looking back on the development of Postage, RogueSheep's Apple Design Award-winning virtual postcard designer and sharing app for the iPhone. He walked the developers in the crowd through a few of the lessons he and his team learned during development and a few of the principles they stuck by as they built the app. Parrish said the first principle RogueSheep stuck to was focus. "Cut, cut, and cut some more" was the slide up on the screen. Parrish said that when they set out to make what's basically an image-editing app, there were a lot of things they could have done, like including lots of tools and items to edit images in intricate ways and help users line them up just right. But it turned out that none of that fit the app they were trying to make. Read More

Apple Design Award 2009 Winners
Mini_discussion_bubble TheAppleBlog - Posted Wed, 10 Jun 2009 21:00:43 UTC +00:00
Apple announced the winners of the 2009 Apple Design Awards last night at a special ceremony hosted by John Geleynse, director of Software Technology Evangelism, and Shann Pruden, senior director for Developer Relations. These awards are an annual affair to recognize “technical excellence, innovation, and outstanding achievement in iPhone and Mac software development.” The depth and breadth of submissions has been accelerating, as interest in the Mac and iPhone has picked up over the last few years. As a point of comparison, the iPhone awards last year were handed out to early pre-release apps because the App Store had not even launched yet. There were about 1,700 web apps in Apple’s online directory, and this year there are over 4,000 web apps and more than 50,000 native apps available in the iTunes App Store. Rather than being split out into categories for best game, best user experience, best application, and so Read More

The Apple Design Awards 2009 took place yesterday evening during the WWDC.  The awards were designed to recognize some of the best iPhone and Mac software developers from all over the world.  As can be expected, the competition was fierce, but someone has to win. The Apple Design Awards 2009 winners are: Best iPhone Student App:Wooden Labyrinth 3D from Elias Pietil Best iPhone OS 3.0 Beta App: AccuTerra Beta from AccuTerra The applications were evaluated using these six criteria: platform innovation, technology integration and adoption, connectedness, localization, design and quality, and finally performance tuning and optimization. I love this app
theo69 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
it has beautiful UI and it is extremely fun to use! I use it on daily basis and it is well worth the price!
Makes pretty postcards!
cd5000 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I use this to send out little postcards to friends and family and they look awesome in the emails. It's quick and easy to use and it seems to update regularly. 
Very Surprised!
Aftershok 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
I wasn't expecting much, and thought the prices was a couple bucks too high, but then I used it. Wow! I'm seriously impressed! Very easy to use, well desiged interface. The templates are beautiful. I'd like more to choose from, but then again 50 slick templates beats 100 slapped together pieces of junk. It's clear the developers put a LOT of work into this. I am a fan!
Meh... not a big deal.
Berklie 3.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Where this would really have been a great app would be to have offered templates which allowed one to add multiple photos to a template to send. That's something that would have made this stand out from simply e-mailing a single photo. As it is, this app simply allows one to add photos to 3 or 4 good templates (and countless dead-average others). Not really anything compelling. Great User Interface, as everyone states, but so what? It needs to do more (multiple-photo templates) before I would suggest someone buy it.
A sad little report
Dumbfounded in Dallas 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Downloaded it. Paid for it. And used it to make a couple really good looking cards. Then I sent them off. What happened next? Precisely nothing. The program simply would not send the e-mail, despite repeated trying. So five dollars sadder and five dollars wiser I've deleted it and moved on. Wish I could be more positive, but that's the story.
nice app
Curb Stompin' 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
It's ok, has a nice user interface. My real only gripe is alot of the cards are rather bland looking. Needs alot more cards as well as more variety. Fantasy and sci-fi themed postcards would be nice, even cards based on city landmarks, say for example Los Angeles themed cards would have the Hollywood sign, The downtown skyline, Santa Monica pier, well you get the idea. I emailed a card to myself to see how good or bad it looked when viewed on a bigger screen and i'm happy to say the card looked really good. As it stands presently, the app works really well, with a well thought out easy to use user interface.
Love it.....but needs some work!
Missyc77 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
First let me say I really do love this app. It's a neat idea and it has really cute templates. But, it does need some fixes, as most new apps do. First, I personally do not like the white box it mails around the template. I think it looks awful. It also doesn't allow me to use these pictures in other apps such as montage or collage. Please get rid of the box around the actual picture!!  Also, I wish there were more fonts to choose from on each template. Some templates have more choices than others, which is rather odd.  And, of course, i'd like to see more templates!!! You started off with plenty but I want MORE, MORE, MORE please!!!  Keep up the good work and I know you'll take these considerations to heart! 
Simply fantastic
hdm42 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Pixel-perfect user interface.
Great App!
DotDashDash 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
The app is 5 star no matter what the content would have been due to absolutely gorgeous GUI! The application works great, looks great and is a good idea! Deffinately would recommend it! (would like a few more templates :) )
Outstanding application - elegant and functional
Ghostmoth 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.1
Postage is an exceptional application, and one I find myself using constantly. It really brings the creativity and style of mail templates to the iPhone.
A great add on for my iPhone camera
ReidCarlberg.com 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Have been using this for a couple of days and I gotta say it's pretty darn cool. The look and feel is nice, the output is nice, an its super 3G S fast.
The best app ever!
jpv1234 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great job guys! And the ugly final message is gone, it's wonderful!
Ridiculous!
Need Zen 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Paid $4.99 to do marketing for this developer. When you send out a card, at the bottom is a giant add for this app. Disgusting, looks cheap and tacky. No one who would receive one of these ecards would be enticed to then buy the app with the ad on the bottom. I've been robbed!!!!!
Travelers
Ann and Billy 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Good job on this app that fits our needs: We simply want to take a picture on our travels and email it with some words. For those of us who have written lots of postcards in our lives, this is a lot of fun to duplicate in the e-world. First, the app is smooth, the interface is easy to use and logical. Love the resize and crop. It works great for a quick, short message that you want to send to a friend. We chose a pict from our photo library, and another from the camera directly and it came through in the email much larger than I expected, the result was a great smile. We contacted the developer about wishing for a 'send to group' feature and they responded quickly and said that is coming. Enjoy!
Fun & Creative
Venusmuppet 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I love how the Templates drop from the top ... very cute. Great Templates .... Of course MORE please! I love the fun 'CUT-OUT' Templates, very fun! All it all, this program runs smoothly and easily, also I've had no crashes.
Beautiful, Fun, and Simple.
matthiggins 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Anyone who misses the .Mac Ecards feature should buy this application immediately. Apple, in fact, should purchase it and make it a part of the iPhone and MobileMe. It truly looks and feels like it was made by them anyway. It is a portable solution for sending beautifully designed, personalized ecards that look both professional and fun. Whether you're looking to send a card for a birthday, invitation, or just a generic letter via email, this is the app for you. The developer support is also extremely responsive and was happy to answer all my questions and requests. Short version: BUY IT NOW!!!! 
Clean crisp flawless!
Trish3231 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Love this little app.
almost perfect
2trees 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
i love the design of this app. it has attractive templates and the UI is pretty intuitive. I wish there was a setting where i can have my email address as the sender instead of typing it in each time (if the app already has this, i apologize. i just used it once). also, if i could send a real physical postcard, that would be perfect but please make it affordable.
Very pretty, but not yet 5 star.
Cristgarage 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
I really think Postage raises the bar on graphical achievements being used on a mobile phone. It's stunning really.
Not worth 2.99
goodma 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app has nice interface but has some problems as a postcard app 1 this app uses a fix email server. I donor know what it is. I do not what send my email through unknown server. Could be servious legal problem 2 the card is just a image, it does not fell like a postcard 3 there is a big author's logo in every xard you sent. his is rediculous. I already paid , leave my card alone!!!! Over all as a 2.99 app, it is fun to use but does not deliver what it should
Great value!
hckywidow 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
WOW!! What a great App. Lots of choices and really well done.
Outstanding!
iPhoneDevDude 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is one of the best looking iPhone apps out there. Great UI!
Great Application
Lizzard.P 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love it! Beautiful and easy to use. Templates are fun and there are many to choose from. Makes my photos look interesting. Glad I got it! Two thumbs up!
Easy to use and great themes
talpazz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This application comes with an easy to use interface and great themes to choose from.
Weee!
hellroy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great fun! I am really enjoying "spicing" up the photos I email to friends, family and blogs. The choices are plentiful and super cool. The interface is smooth and intuitive, best I have seen so far! Great bargain!
Incredible!
heckj 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great graphics and functionality for sending postcards from your iPhone. Great interface!
Fantastic!
Keith McD 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The app has some beautifully designed custom themes, many of which are very cute and inventive (especially the cutouts, I'll never get tired of putting someone's face into a dinosaur or teddy bear! :D). The transitions and graphics throughout the app are seamless and very VERY well done (all the way to a great looking envelope while sending the postcard right within the app, instead of the standard email interface on the phone), and it's great to be able to send custom digital postcards right from the phone while I'm out. They cards look great when read on the phone or the computer, and the formatting adapts. Overall, a solid, useful, well thought out and beautifully designed program for a steal of a price!
Great App! Loved it and will actually use it too!
Patrick Gomulka 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Bought this app on the suggestion of a friend. Well worth the $2.99. Very easy to use. Great graphics and integration of iPhone camera roll. I thought the editing ability of the photo in the postcard was outstanding as well! Definately will recommend to my friends. I have used other Photo Editing and photo magic apps and this one blows them away.
