Posted 08/11/2011 at 1:21pm | by Nik Rawlinson and Susie Ochs Believe J.J. Cale, because he knows what he’s talking about: traveling light is the only way to fly. The next time you’re tempted to overpack, remember to take half as many clothes, twice as much money, and your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. An iOS device can replace paper maps, books, and travel guides; and the information you’ll find in apps and iBooks is more timely and relevant anyway. Obviously you won’t need CDs or a portable DVD player -- or pricey hotel or in-flight pay-per-view -- to stay entertained. And by posting photos or blog updates about your vacation online, you won’t even have to send postcards. To prepare you and your electronic travel buddy to hit the road, we found the best apps, gear, and know-how to keep you connected. Travel can be tough on your iPad or Read More

Apple iPhone Ad Voice Guy Ruins Christmas in New Commercial
Mini_discussion_bubble TheAppleBlog - Posted Thu, 17 Dec 2009 22:36:37 UTC +00:00
The guy from Apple’s “There’s an App for That” series of commercials does a fine, upstanding job, don’t get me wrong. He’s a credit to his profession, in fact, and has become iconically associated with one of the most successful products ever released. But he’s seriously ruining Christmas. A new Apple ad in the series features an app-centric take on the classic “12 Days of Christmas” holiday carol, as rendered with uncompromising unmusicality by the voice that smugly informs us about everything there’s an app for. The apps don’t correspond to the actual items described in the original tune, but instead highlight various holiday-time activities. Here’s how it breaks down (all links direct to iTunes): So all told, that’s $22 for a complete holiday. Is it worth it? Probably not. Actually definitely not. Trust someone who has a whole heap of Christmas-themed apps cluttering up his iTunes library from last year, Read More

First Look: Postman 2.0
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Thu, 09 Jul 2009 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
I hadn't really noticed, but it turns out there are lots and lots of postcard apps in the App Store. It makes sense, the iPhone (and to an extent, the iPod touch) is a great virtual postcard device. Snap a photo while on vacation, add a quick message and send it off via e-mail, all from within the iPhone itself. It's actually a neat example of old and new communication methods fusing together. Yesterday, Steve looked at Postcard Express and today I'm looking at Freeverse's Postman 2.0 (iTunes link). Released just a few weeks ago, Postman was one of first applications to take advantage of some of iPhone OS 3.0's capabilities, Google Maps integration and mail sheets. With Postman 2.0, Freeverse has redesigned the interface (using the talents of the Iconfactory's David Lanham), added themes, made it easier to position text and improved stability with other services. Everything old is new again; frog design does an iPhone app
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 08 Jul 2009 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
Early in Apple history, long before Jonathan Ive came along and performed his design miracles, there was frog design. Under the helm of Hartmut Esslinger, frog design was responsible for some of the more memorable early Apple designs, including the iconic Apple IIc and the Imagewriter II printer. More importantly, Esslinger defined the Snow White design language that was used by Apple between 1984 and 1990 to define how Apple products of that era would look. History is repeating itself now, with frog design recently releasing a new iPhone app, Postcard Express [App Store]. The $3.99 app definitely doesn't break new ground in terms of functionality -- it creates and sends digital postcards from your iPhone photos. As with Postman, SodaSnap Postcards, and other apps of this type, Postcard Express lets you either take a new picture or use an existing gallery photo to send an electronic postcard to your friends Read More

First Look: Postman adds social networking to the iPhone ecards mix
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Fri, 19 Jun 2009 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
In the ecosystem of the App Store, the postcard-sending app occupies a healthy niche; about two pagefuls -- 60 apps -- show up in the store, for a category weighting of 0.125 flatulans. The flatulan, of course, is the unit of measurement of App Store penetration, equaling the 480 individual apps that include the word 'fart' somewhere in their description. Among those postcard apps, there are several standouts for virtual cards (ADA winner Postage, for example) and even a few that let you send physical postcards for a small fee (TapTapCards, goPostal and Postino). With Postman (iTunes link/website), released today by Freeverse and Taptivate for $0.99 for iPhone OS 3.0 devices, the postcard-sending app category gets a social media boost. Postman lets you deliver your two-sided ecards (yes, the app gives you the option of simulating the back of a traditional postcard, complete with stamp graphic) via Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, email, Read More
Postman - Create Unique Postcards And Share Them Everywhere
Mini_discussion_bubble Apple iPhone Apps - Posted Thu, 18 Jun 2009 20:06:18 UTC +00:00
The unique iPhone OS 3.0 apps just keep on coming.  Freeverse has just released Postman, a new app that allows you to create and share some very unique postcards in a myriad of ways. To create a postcard using Postman you must first choose an image for the front of the card.  You can choose from photos within your iPhone’s library, templates, or you can even use your location.  Postman uses the new Map API to find your location on the map, and you can then manipulate the map in a variety of ways to create the perfect image for your postcard.  After you have chosen an image, you can add text to the front and back of the postcard. Postman also allows you to share your postcard on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, the web, and via email straight from the app itself, so you will never have to exit. Because Postman Read More

postman vs. postage
headboysband 3.0 stars Version: 2.1.2
UI is not as good as Postage. For example, the way selecting different color or text. No many themes to choose as in Postage. no customized postage, freeverse logo is one we an choose. i like the postage to show the location at which country we are at that moment. for example, if i am in China, i like a chinese postage to be showned. and the UI for selecting what to do is so no kool. Postage just have better UI. not that i like this one because i like this one but becase it was cheaper compare to Postage. works on better UI and i may give 5 stars.
Great App, but ...
MikeTexas 5.0 stars Version: 2.1.2
I love this application and have used it several times, however a few updates would make it even better:
Simple and easy to use
Baronial Ascendency 4.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
This app is as simple to use as an Apple default app and the results are amazing. Only complaint: I wish the Twitter link would have the option to simply twit a tinyurl link instead of posting "Please Mr. Postman, here's my postcard.". It's cute but really irritating. For users complaining they can't clear their postcard and start over, all you have to do is shake the iPhone/iPod like an Etch-a-Sketch and a Clear All option pops up.
Love it
LordKelvin 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
I love this ap. Does exactly what it says - allows you to create little custom postcards. The ability to use your iphone contacts is a plus. So easy to send photo immediately and compose a message. I have sent to another iPhone user and they were amazed!
Best PostCard App of All!
JudieKaren 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
I tried some other post card apps and was disappointed with quality and even that the emailed postcards were never delivered. But Postman delivered on all counts.
Very cool
Bradbike 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Love this app. It's the better one out there. I should know since I downloaded a few of the Pay Apps that just did not work as well as Postman.
Responsive developer
VonTrousers 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
Less than a week after I posted a one-star review, the developer fixed every problem. The app is now pretty darn good. Kudos.
Neat little app
pocketdrummer 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Although it sort of falls into the "novelty item" bracket of apps, it is always fun to send someone you know a virtual post card like this. Especially if you are traveling somewhere and don't feel like using snail mail. In all, it's a great app. I can't wait to see how else they improve it!
One of the best app experiences around.
gongloo 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Postman is truly a pleasure to use with it's slick user interface and slew of customizations available without overloading the user. I use this to send gorgeous postcards to my girlfriend and she loves them. Surely a winner! Definitely some room for improvement, too. Sure, there's that whole photo resizing and whatnot that could be implemented, but let's concentrate on even better, more profit-bound features. How about an in-app printing/mailing service (using iPhone OS 3.0 in-app purchases?) for sending physical cards via snail-mail? This is just the tip of the iceberg!
X
X-Quisite 2.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Will not upload to facebook!!
It's okay.
wjlarsen.net 3.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
You can't beat .99 but the UI is way to chunky. Especially the bottom bar with "front, back, send" options. It takes up too much space so that I can't even position the text at the bottom of the card. It doesn't feel mac like. I know this company from their other programs on OSX and these too suffer from UI issues.
Crashes
Wedding Photographer 3.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Program would be great if it didn't always quit while trying to upload to facebook. 3 stars for now.
Great app!
Magesticlion 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Easy to use! Update to reposition text and more themes great! Just allow to reposition photos already in library and a 100% winner! Great job!
I want a card, not an attachment!
LikaMe 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
This app doesn't send a card via email, it sends an attachment instead WARNING: My friends get a PNG file attachment that they have to open to see the card! hiCard sends real cards. Try telling my mother "mom, sorry, you must open the attachment to see the card" It just doesn't work. Also, not that many card choices. The reviewers for this version so far must be company employees of Freeverse.
Get it!
Booshay82 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
This app is slick! I love all the customizable settings & the fact you can post to different social networking sites and personal blogs. Sometimes you want a personal touch and not just a plain email or text.... This app is it. You won't be disappointed, especially for the $.
Great app! Updates have been quick and effective
afogg 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
I liked the app two versions ago, and the recent updates have just made it amazing. This is a steal at .99. One of the only 5 star apps I have seen.
Get it
Kevin33040 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Pretty neat! Well worth 0.00! I have used mine even while not traveling. It's just a neat app to have. It has never crashed on me, and I tell all my friends about it.
Not working well. It freezes all the time
Risitos24 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Took a picture of a landmark and prepared the postcard several times to send it over but application would get stuck and the postcard would not go through.
Great app
Lee Downey 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Love this app. Very easy to use.
Excellent job ... But
Da "J" Man 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
Never written a review before but felt compelled as I really enjoy this app. Developer, I love the themes. I would love to see more in the future. My only disappointment and the reason I give this app 4 stars is the inability to rotate and resize photos. This functionality is imperative for creating the "perfect" postcard. I agree with other reviewers that the "weather" icon is pretty much useless. In short, thanks developer for this app. It allows me to send distant relatives and close friends a unique virtual postcard. I'll be on the lookout for an update. ;)
Beautifully designed and would be 5 stars if....
LLHB 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
Props to Freeverse for a very slick app that's functional and fun to use, at a great price. The one thing that drives me nuts is that it doesn't accommodate photos in portrait format; the entire app is designed for horizontal/landscape formatted pics. (You can *use* a portrait-format pic, but it gets horribly cropped.) I'm desperately hoping they add portrait-format postcard abilities in the next version. And yes, as previsously mentioned, it would also be very helpful to be able to move/resize the photo once you've dropped it into the postcard.
Great update!
First Responder 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
Thanks
Well Designed and Fun
run747 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
Great little app for sending fun messages to friends as postcards. The update has added a lot of new functionality and made the app even better.
Great App...GREAT update!
Imliving4him 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
This app is fun to use, and the developers have listened to the feedback of their customers! Thanks for making Postcard a great application for the iPhone!!!
2.0? Beyond wicked
fakehead 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
7/7 New version is amazing. Perfectly adressed the things that need to be fixed and then some. Next update I would like to see the resizing and rotating of images in themes. Other than my comments below, it's kind of hard to find fault with this app. It's damn near perfect. Update: 6/26 Postman also seems to over compress images. Can we get a quality setting? It would be nice if we could send a postcard directly to another postcard user on the iPhone.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
WSNH 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
For two years now I've been waiting for a program that allows me to send a postcard to my family and friends without shopping for a postcard that someone else offers. I'm now able to use any of my photp's in the photo album or take a new picture to send to my family and/or friends. I truly looks like a real postcard being sent to the other person. It evan has a digital stamp which makes it look real. Very, Very Cool. I just hate taking time from my busy schedule and shopping for a postcard that will do from the rack and then find a stamp from all the stamps I've purchased in the last few years from the Post Office. Then I have to drive to the post office which uses gas and wait in line to make sure I'm using the right postage so I can mail it out snail mail. NOW, it doesn't matter and is very easy to do with this app. This is one of the few apps I use all the time now. If it's lengthy, I send an E-mail. If it's a few lines, I now use the Postman app.
Need photo resize/crop and a portrait mode
jes0811 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Tried to create a postcard with a portrait photo. The heads were cut off. I can't find a way to select which section of the photo to use, but even better would be to have landscape layout card and portrait layout card options. Also hope that MMS will be a supported option in the future.
Needs portrait option
scoyle0825 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Works great as long as you only take landsape photos. Needs ability to handle portrait photos as well. A resizing/crop option would be nice to.
Great
fishy9115 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Does what it advertises xD
Great app. but could use refinement
appy days 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I enjoy the easy controls and fiinished results of this app for the most part but the one thing that could be refined is the size of the "headline" on the picture portion of the postcard. The text is much too large and there seems to be no adjustment to downsize the text so that the background picture is not lost to the massive scaling of the headline. Pics of people have to be carefully positioned so that the wording does not cover over faces. Please update this so that the app. can get the credit it is due otherwise.
Almost there!
Lanchung 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love the design and concept of this app! But as a graphic designer, I have two requests: please let us freely position the front text (bonus if we can rotate it too!), and let us change the font size. Almost there, guys!
Very 'Macentric'
solohans 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am so envious of these freeverse people. They just 'get it.'
Map feature needs fixed
NCTrails 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I like the postcard app okay. But... 1. Map feature doesn't wait for the more precise location to be obtained from the gps. It uses the tower location. That's stupid. No excuse for that falling through the cracks... It's not like the 3g just came out yesterday. Work around for this is just use the map app, then snap a screen shot of the map you want. Then select that as the image to use on the post card. 2. No spell check. Lame. We all are used to how this OS works. To not implement this was lazy. 3 give us some options on the postmark. I don't like the one used... Should be at least a couple of options.
Love it
jessica N. 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm going a way for a week and this will be a great way to send a fun cool looking card to my family ( and u don't need a stamp ) !!! Love it !!!!! BYE IT !!!!!
Spell check please! Otherwise, very fun!!!
PinkPapillon 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
As others stated, spell check is a MUST for any app that allows/requires typing! In that sentence alone, I was corrected 4 times! What a great idea... Take it up just one more notch and you'll have 5 stars and a lot more buyers!!!
confused

i don't get it.I just purchased this app but it says it requires iphone os.I have an iphone 16GB.pls. help .
Good application
Mustafayusuf 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I liked the simplicity of it. It's not something that you would use over and over again. But the occassional greeting card can be done really nice in this. And for it's use and functionality $0.99 is a fair price.
Perfect

How fun is this, it's great. Worth the .99 cents.
You can move the postcard text
Dashomatic 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just hit the enter key 2 or 3 times & it moves the text further down so it's no longer in the middle...not a perfect solution, but it's a start. Dittos on every one elses comments. Just clear up the issues stated by the others & you'll definitely have a 5 star product.
Very cool app

 Very cool app- I totally agree with the previous comments- fix/add those few ideas, and it would make it go from great to phenomenal! I'm talking about sizing the text, scaling & cropping...Otherwise, I love it! Really cool! Thanks!! . 

FCdrifter 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is a really fun app. It needs the ability to resize and manually reposition text and you should be able reposition the picture used in the background as well.
Fun!!

Well Designed and Fun

Great little app for sending fun messages to friends as postcards. Please allow for more options with text size and placement and the app will be 5+.
Looks nice, but...
dorianworkman 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Need to fix a few things. Please: 1. Add scaling and cropping of photo 2. Allow resizing and repositioning of text on front 3. Fix the location pin! It's wildly inaccurate compared to Maps. Thanks!
Does what it says
Jamesallen73 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app that allows you to send your location to email or facebook. Not sure how useful. What would be nice would be location map on 1 "side" of postcard and a photo of your choosing on the other "side"
Great app but
JDFord 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The text is too big on the front of the postcard. It covers the pin if you're wanting to show you're location on the front.
Great App
WardLee 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a cool app! It has lots of customization and the fact you can send to many sites and email is a big plus.
Review!!!

Makes it fun to create your first five postcards!
 Very good program
WiiTodd 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good program. Easy to use. Clean, nice looking results. Suggestion: Add more font options like size and placement. And photos should include zooming and cropping.

This is a fun little app though not very versatile. It's most serious flaw is that, for some reason, the iPhone spell-check doesn't seem to work within the app so typos have to be corrected manually; this is annoying. Also, if the developer would make the handwriting font in the opening screen available as one of the font choices that would be cool.
Location should have map link
JonnyAframe 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
When the card is sent people should be able to either adjust the scale of the map that is sent or there should be. Google map link that is included so the reciever can "scale back" the image to see where you are- please tell me others feel the same way- other than that minor gripe, it is pretty good
Fun app with a few issues....
ZaneyGuy 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is fun as long as you like how the application chooses to position your photo and don't mind text right smack dab in the middle of the photo. If you want to move the text off of someone's forehead or change the scale or position of the photo the application is a bit frustrating.
Memorable app

$1Really Well Spent
sasnnm 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is simple and elegant. As complex as you want to make it. Should come standard on all iPhones.
Pretty good, could be better...
sashalyn 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a fun app, and worth the 99 cents... But the text on the front of the card is HUGE! I can't seem to find any way to make it smaller, or to move it around so that it doesn't disrupt my photo. Fix that, and it's a five star app.
Very cool app
Canbio2000 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
