Shop til you drop (calls): How iPhone users shop in stores
Mini_discussion_bubble TheAppleBlog - Posted Fri, 24 Feb 2012 21:00:25 UTC +00:00
Earlier this week Nielsen released a study that found just about a third of smartphone users turn to their device for shopping-related activities. The study, conducted during the third quarter of 2011, gives a good picture of how we’re using smartphones in stores. One thing the study highlights is that while not everyone is using their phone in this way, many more would like to. Below I’ve combined Nielsen’s results with a primer on how you can get in on the trend of being a savvy shopper with your iPhone specifically using apps that are available in Apple’s Apple Store. Nielsen found that 38 percent of survey respondents use their smartphone for comparison shopping while in a physical store. This is encouraged by online retailers, and last holiday season Amazon gave a 5 percent discount on certain products to users who scanned retail items using the Amazon app. Big box stores like Target are Read More

Amazon offers additional discount to mobile shoppers on December 10th
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Thu, 08 Dec 2011 12:26:38 UTC +00:00
Amazon is launching a neat campaign to promote its Price Check mobile application. This Saturday (December 10th), the online retailer will give shoppers an added incentive to check the Amazon price on their mobile phone while in a physical retail store. Using the Price Check by Amazon app (available on iPhone and Android) while shopping in physical retail stores, customers will get an additional discount of 5% (up to $5) off Amazon’s price on up to three qualifying products. Not all products are eligible though — only the following categories are included under this scheme: electronics, toys, music, sporting goods and DVDs. All said, Amazon anticipates December 10th will be one of the biggest days of the year for Price Check. Finally, the announcement ends with a reminder that shoppers can also use Price Check to submit in-store prices, allowing all Amazon customers get the lowest prices year-round. This Holiday, Amazon Wants You to Brazenly Stick it to Bricks and Mortar Retailers
Mini_discussion_bubble ReadWriteWeb - Posted Tue, 06 Dec 2011 18:06:37 UTC +00:00
When you're holiday shopping this year, there's little doubt that Amazon would prefer that you buy that copy of the Steve Jobs biography or Snuggie on their site, rather than in an actual store. That's why the e-commerce giant offers things like free shipping and a mobile app that lets you scan barcodes and compare prices. In many cases, the price Amazon pulls up on its Price Check app for iOS is going to smaller than the one stuck to the item you're holding in your hand. They know this, and so to further encourage you to buy from them, Amazon is offering a 5% discount on items purchased via the Price Check app. The promotion has its limitations. For one, the deal is only good this Saturday, December 10. According to Amazon's press release, the 5% discount is good on up to three "qualifying products in eligible categories." That list Read More
7 apps for conquering Black Friday
Mini_discussion_bubble TheAppleBlog - Posted Mon, 21 Nov 2011 23:46:13 UTC +00:00
With Black Friday just around the corner, your iPhone might be your greatest weapon for getting the best deals around. Just download these apps, be sure you have a good case for your phone, and remember not to literally crash through doors, regardless of what retailer marketing says they’d like you to do. (Free) If you want the virtual experience of looking through those fun newspaper inserts with lots of pictures and happy models wearing ugly sweaters, then this app is for you. Plain and simple collection of ads that aren’t searchable, saveable or sharable. But despite limited features, as someone who enjoys marketing, I genuinely loved looking through the national ads with this app, in their full print glory. (Free) This app is put out by the very reputable and addictive Dealnews site. This app is a great tool for searching for a particular product or product category. Need an external Read More

Going Shopping With Google Shopper for iPhone
Mini_discussion_bubble TheAppleBlog - Posted Thu, 03 Feb 2011 19:00:39 UTC +00:00
Android users have had Google Shopper for over a year now. Google finally decided to port the app over to the iOS platform, and it became available in the App Store yesterday. We took it out for a spin to see how it performs in the real world. Google Shopper allows you to search for an item by bar code scan, picture or voice. The results are identical to those you get by going to shopping.google.com in Safari’s iPhone browser. The key feature of the Google Shopper app is the ability to scan without actually having to type anything. In real world tests, the program ran great. Unlike similar solutions from Amazon’s Price Check or Mirasense Scandit, the bar code doesn’t need to be “aligned” in the cross hairs. The Shopper app nearly instantly recognized the UPC and began the search. Book searches seemed to work best with Google Shopper. Not only Read More
Amazon Launches Price Check App Just In Time for Black Friday
Mini_discussion_bubble 148 Apps - Posted Wed, 24 Nov 2010 14:04:01 UTC +00:00
Amazon's new app takes some of the frustration out of holiday shopping by putting helpful information right at your fingertips. The holiday shopping season is an incredibly stressful time. You find what you think is the perfect gift, but it seems a little expensive and you start to wonder if you couldn’t find it cheaper somewhere else. Of course, if you walk away now you may find out that the price is no better at other stores or, even worse, by the time you decide to buy everyone is sold out of the product you want. Amazon is trying to alleviate your fears at least a little by launching the new Price Check app, which should go a long way in helping shoppers find the best deals. Price Check allows users to scan a product’s barcode with their iPhone, or even take a picture of the item in question or say Read More
Amazon Price Check iPhone app lets you compare product prices before making a purchase
Mini_discussion_bubble Appletell - Posted Mon, 22 Nov 2010 21:13:08 UTC +00:00
Just in time for upcoming Black Friday deals, Amazon has released a new iPhone app - Price Comparison. Available now from the App Store as a free download, Amazon Price Check iPhone app basically does one thing. It lets you compare product in-store prices offered by various merchants as against Amazon’s prices for the same products. The app lets you scan a barcode, snap a picture or say or type a product name, then it will give you prices for those items from Amazon.com and other online merchants. From there, you would be able to do one-click purchase and have it delivered to your home. Price Check iPhone app is pretty simple to use. While inside a brick-and-mortar store and you’ve stumbled upon a great product that you want to purchase, you simply scan the product’s barcode and then the app will display prices from lowest to highest. The app also Read More

Tried to scan two barcodes. Both came back wrong. One was a bottle of hand sanitizer that the app says is a hockey jersey !!!!!

Can't even use barcode scanner!

There are already other similar apps that you can download that allow you to use an iPhone 3G to scan barcodes. Why does this one deny that feature just because the camera doesn't have auto focus? For me, this app is useless.
