Pulse News for iOS has added a local category to its news aggregation app. The change puts hundreds of local news sources into the Pulse app, which can make the app a 1 stop destination for a lot of users. As far as I know this is the first news app that has offered tailored local content. Partners include Patch (from our owners AOL), which is available in 800 US cities, and some other regional and suburban publishers have joined up as well. In addition to local news, the app offers localized deals from Groupon, Living Social and Gift City. A new local sports category has content from SBNation, Bleacher Report, and CBS Sports. Finally, the app has added Zagat restaurant info and local food blogs to help users find the best meals in their areas. I tried the app today to generally good results. I didn't see any info from

By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Sep 30, 2011 | Have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch and curious which are the best, most must-have RSS feed reading apps you need to check out? We’ve already covered readers in general, from eBooks to comics, but this time we really wanted to focus on RSS news. So if you want to keep your syndication really simple, and yourself up to date with the latest new, read on for TiPb’s top 5 most recommended RSS feed readings apps for iOS. NetNewsWire is the granddaddy of iOS RSS readers and is still a favorite for many. It syncs with Google Reader, and while in version past that was a laborious process, improvements to both the app and iOS have made it much smoother these days. It’s now been given a whole new codebase and has been picked up by a new team of dedicated developers so

Popular news reading app/service Pulse just got better by integrating some of the Instapaper features. The all new Pulse bookmarklet lets you save some story for the later reading when you will be able to access it either from your computer, smartphone or tablet. What’s more, if you use Google Chrome, there’s a dedicated Chrome extension that does the same job and we’re pretty confident similar add-ons are in works for other popular browsers. While I personally don’t use Pulse — I prefer the old school RSS instead — I’m hearing it’s getting more popular with the day. At the moment, the service is used by more than 5 million people and that number will most likely keep growing. Alternatively, if you’re using Google Chrome as your primary web browser and also have an Android device (but don’t want to run Pulse), you may want to try out the Chrome to

This week for our weekly installment of Picks of the Week we are changing things up a little bit. It’s hard to believe that we have been running the POTW post for 30 weeks now! So far our writers at iSource have highlighted almost 150 separate iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac and Apple TV related items. In the spirit of fun, and to give our hard-working writers a bye week, I thought it would be nice to take some of my favorite posts and create a “Best of” Picks of the Week post this week instead. Sorry for the one day delay, but it was harder than I thought to sort through nearly 150 posts form ten different contributors. Hope you like my selections. Feel free to leave a comment below and let me know some of your favorites you have seen on former POTW posts, or would like to see on

Pulse News Reader, our favorite app for reading news on the iPad, has been updated to version 2.3, where it has introduced Pulse.me. The app remains essentially the same on the surface, as Pulse.me takes a step forward in sharing content between different copies of Pulse, rather than a flashy redesign. You sign-up to the service using the little ‘me’ speech bubble on the front page, and from then on the option to ’star’ a news story will appear. When you click the star, it saves the story you’re reading to a central source accessible from your mobile device, tablet or online at pulse.me. This works across platforms too, as saving a story on my Android phone made it instantly appear on my iPhone too. Another new feature is the ability to save articles to Read It Later, Instapaper, Google Reader and Evernote too, all often requested features over at the

Pulse News app for the iPhone and iPad received a nice update today allowing selected stories to be saved and automatically synced to other Pulse News apps you have or retrieved via the web. Sign-up for the service is free and can be done from within the Pulse News app. All that's required is a user-name and a password. When you see a story you want to save, click on the star symbol. If, for example, you did that on your iPhone, you can pick up your iPad and the saved story will be there too, assuming you have a web connection. The story is also accessible from the Pulse.me website. Saved stories can also be sent to Instapaper, Evernote or Read It Later. If you import newsfeeds from Google Reader, marked stories will also mark them in Google Reader. After some difficulty with iTunes this morning, I was able to

Pulse has been a major player in the news aggregation world, garnering good reviews from TUAW and users. Pulse has released version 2.0 for the iPhone and a good program has become even better. Here's a quick summary of the improvements: This release in general brings Pulse up to the standard of the iPad release. The update now requires iOS 4.0 or above. I check Pulse several times a day and find it very useful. I'm also loving Zite, which I reviewed last week. Zite is iPad-only, but it is a great way to quickly see what is happening in your areas of interest. On the iPad, I use both apps and get the best of both. Zite is better for discovery of news and information, Pulse News is more restricted to what you tell it you want, but in this latest iPhone release Pulse is moving toward a discovery model

Many different sites offer a feed of all their posts which can then be collected into one area for your viewing pleasure. Pulse News Reader is one the best ways to read all of your feeds. Just like apps like Google Reader and other RSS feed readers, Pulse brings together a collection of different sites into one place you can read at your convenience. The app is organized into sections based on your feeds. Scrolling down will browse through the different feeds while scrolling to the side will read the different posts available. There are literally thousands of available feeds and adding them is easy. The app will even sync with your Google Reader account if you want

Pulse News Reader is one of the iPad apps I use on a daily basis and it was worth every penny of its original price. Disillusioned with Flipboard and not a Google Reader user, I wanted something that brought together feeds from sites I read regularly in an attractive and simple way. Pulse turned out to do the job very well. Since then the app has been upgraded to version 2.0, where more feeds can be added, 60 in total, and split into five different sections. Performance is even better and there is also a set of improved recommendations for sites that suit Pulse’s display format. If you haven’t already enjoyed this app, then today is your lucky day, as Pulse has become a free app for the iPhone and the iPad, so now everyone can enjoy its greatness for absolutely nothing!

As it turns out, you don’t have to wonder any longer -- Apple has created a section dedicated to what they consider the best 50 apps. Opinions may vary from user to user as to what constitutes the best iOS apps, but Apple has some ideas of their own and they’ve created a new page of the best 50 in their opinion which they call the App Store Essentials Hall of Fame. It’s a great place for first-time users to immerse themselves in their new iOS device purchase with what many of us would consider the best apps ever made. “More than two years since launch, we’re many apps wiser,” Apple’s gold-hued banner (seen above) reads. “Presenting our ongoing collection of the very best of the best.”

The Pulse News Reader is one of the better RSS reader apps for the iPad, plus there is the equally great News Mini available for the iPhone. The Pulse application had a difficult start to life inside the App Store, after it was yanked out due to it including New York Times content as standard, something the newspaper objected too. After the app was updated to not include the newspapers RSS feed, Pulse returned to the App Store and subsequently became a part of Steve Jobs’ keynote speech at this year’s developer conference. Since then the app has gone on to include the ability to share your favorite news stories via a Posterous blog, simply by clicking a heart icon next to the story in the app. Its only limitation is that the app can only store 20 feeds at once, so if you’re an avid online news reader, you may

We’re still keeping our eye out for great iOS 4 apps that take advantage of the new APIs and features available to developers under iOS4. We’ve found a couple more good ones to share with you guys, and as always, if you see any good ones, drop ‘em in the comments so we can check them out too! Even though Foursquare has already received a general update for iOS4, it seems they’re still adding new features. Along with several needed bug fixes, they’ve added support for in-app sms and e-mail as well as more support for iPhone 4 retina display. I was pretty disappointed in Foursquare for quite a while as far as the GPS refreshing and multitasking but it appears this version fixed most of my complaints. It’s nice to see they’re taking an active role in improving the overall user experience. I took a look at this app about

[Update 7/21: Pulse 1.0.2 was recently released and addressed some of the issues I had with the app, particularly the loading times and scrolling speed.] What Pulse seems to specialize in (and these are my words, not developer Alphonso Studios ‘) is a more fluid web reading experience, and, at its best, the app feels more like a good e-magazine with customized content than a list of feeds that you trail your finger down. [click on a thumbnail to see an enlarged view] The way that Pulse organizes your news contributes a lot to its e-magazine feel. There are no folders or unread counts for your feeds, and you can display up to 20 of them in one vertical list. Each feed displays three thumbnails worth of posts at a time, and you can swipe horizontally on a feed to display more items. You can add feeds to Pulse manually (by keyword,

Pulse News Mini for iPhone is one of the newer RSS clients to appear in the App Store. I happened to catch it in the featured section of the App Store and figured I’d give it a try. Up until now, I’ve been a faithful fan of the Reeder client for iPhone. I’m starting to think that Pulse News Mini could definitely give it a run for it’s money. Read on for more screenshots and a walkthrough. The first thing you’ll notice upon launching Pulse News Mini is how visual it really is. You can really interact with your feeds in ways other RSS apps don’t let you. There are 2 general motions you’ll use to read your news feeds. The first is just general scrolling from top to bottom. This will allow you to scroll through your different feeds. The second is from side to side. This lets you tab

The Pulse News Reader for iPad (US$3.99) gained some notoriety last month when the stylish app was released, then promptly yanked from the App Store by Apple at the behest of The New York Times. The Times did not want their RSS feed featured in Pulse; changes were made and the app has been back in the App Store since about June 8th. Now comes word from developer Alphonso Labs that a new version of the app -- Pulse News Mini ($2.99) -- is now available for iPhone and iPod touch. It's iOS 4.0 tested, and from a quick look at the app, it does an amazing job of putting the functionality of Pulse into a smaller form factor. As you can see from the video above, Pulse News Mini looks quite similar to the iPad app. Of course, the individual pieces of the Pulse "mosaic" are smaller, but the way

This is a great app, i have about five to ten places I like to visit from different websites to apps and this allows me to bring it all into one place. It has become my go to app. I wish they have a better iPad version I can deal with the small size, but really wish there was better resolution and maybe even a few extras built into an iPad version. My advice is definitely sign up for an account to help link across all your devices. I would recommend this app to anyone who likes to read just about anything from the web!
