by Sebastian Anthony on January 19, 2011 at 06:20 AM FILED UNDER: web, ipad, Porn lord Hugh Hefner has just announced, via Twitter, that the recently-digitized entire Playboy catalog will be coming to the iPad. Interestingly, though, he also says that Playboy content will be coming to the iPad, which suggests it will utilize iOS's upcoming subscription support. If all that wasn't cool enough, and further confusing Apple's stance on adult content, Hugh also confirmed that his entire opus of porn will be uncensored. Historically, Apple has been incredibly tight when it comes to nudity and sexuality -- but, rather incongruously, the Playboy and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit apps have always remained unscathed. Neither of those apps have full frontal nudity, though, so an uncensored Playboy for iPad app could be a sign that Apple's puritanical policing is being relaxed.

By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Feb 23, 2010 | Apple Senior VP of Marketing, Phil Schiller, was quoted by the New York Times in an article on the removal of 5000 sex-based app from the iTunes App Store: “It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see.” To developers who weren’t afforded any warning or options to pre-emptively make changes where such changes would have been possible: “We obviously care about developers, but in the end have to put the needs of the kids and parents first.” As to why Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit app, the Playboy app, and a few other publication-associated apps were allowed to remain: “The difference is this is a well-known company with previously published material available broadly in a well-accepted

One of the new rules is no more bikini apps, unless you happen to be Sports Illustrated (or FHM or Playboy). Sports Illustrated, for instance, just released its 2010 Swimsuit app on iTunes on February 9, before the ban really started. The SI Swimsuit app is filled with pictures of bikini-clad models. If you fire up iTunes right now, you will see the SI Swimsuit app being promoted on the main App Store homepage. It is currently the No. 1

Sports Illustrated took a different approach with this year’s SI Swimsuit iPhone app. Instead of charging an upfront cost like they did last year, leaving curious consumers with the burden of having to make a purchasing decision without getting a taste of the goods, they decided to offer the app for free, albeit in limited form. SI Swimsuit 2010, in its free form, features a single photo from each of SI’s top models along with their respective bios and the ability to save each photo to your camera roll to use as you please. It also features just a handful of model videos. This may be enough to satisfy some of you, but Sports Illustrated is hoping it is only enough to tease you and force you into upgrading to the premium version for a one-time in-app purchase of $1.99, which unlocks every last bit of content available in the app, including:

I have an idea
jkeeler 111
Version: 1.0.0
I don't know about you guys but I find this app rather offensive to me so I REPORTED A PROBLEM and said it was too explicit. maybe if enough people REPORTED A PROBLEM then it will be removed like it should be. it's unfair for 5000 other apps to be removed and not this one as well. either they all stay or all go.
Would be fine without the ads

Version: 1.1.0
Hate the ads. No excuse to sell an App and put these awful advertisements in it. Boo

Yay for boobies!
Sync'r
Version: 1.0.0
I suppose that since Time magazine submitted this and that it's Sports Illustrated, there is a special reason they get to show boobies in tight bikinis OR EVEN BETTER, NO CLOTHES AT ALL! Seriously! The in-app purchase includes completely nude pictures with only paint obscuring the entire view.
I just wish I could use Wobble iBoobs to jiggle the boobs in this app!
Thanks Apple for double standards in the app store an making an exception for an app that goes further than the ones you'd allowed and since pulled!
It's Free, People
Greg7388
Version: 1.2
Hey, it's free, and you get some great content from Sports Illustrated. The only way you could get this for free is sitting inside a grocery store reading through the magazine yourself.
What I will say, is that it's great that Apple hasn't cut this out of the app store yet. The recent ban of these sort of apps is bad for developers, and consumers. Instead of parental controls, they've decided to just delete these sorts of apps. Something tells me the only reason this wasn't one of the 5000+ apps deleted was the fact that SI has some money, and Apple would like to keep the publisher happy for the future magazine sales they'll see on the iPad.
I'm a FAN
aarree
Version: 1.0.0
There are plenty of beautiful natural women on this app and I'm a fan for the price of $1.99.

Version: 1.2
I DElETED THE APP THEN TRIED TO REDOWNLOAD AND IT SAID I HAD TO PAY AGAIN WTF. ITUNES FIX THIS
So here are the rules, folks:
Sporktastic
Version: 1.0.0
If your company is an established media empire, then Apple will continue to distribute your T&A app. If your company is a small software developer, however, then Apple will pull your T&A app and deprive you of a livelihood.
This illustrates the need for alternate software outlets for the iPod/iPhone and upcoming iPad. No single company, not even Apple, should have so much control over a marketplace.
If Apple can be pressured to remove (some) girlie apps today, what type of apps will they remove tomorrow?
SI 2010
Pretty Boy
Version: 1.0.0
Why is this app allowed? It is nothing short of soft porn that my underage boys are downloading to their touches. Very irresponsible iTunes!

Did not know Bikinis were a sport??? Nude posing, new olympic competition?
ogmios2
Version: 1.0.0
Are women in bikini posing in an "overtly sexual" context a sport? What is this disgusting app still doing on top of the sports category when my 12 years old boy is looking for figure skating apps? Apple, you just traumatized him by allowing to see all those beautiful women. I am now afraid that he will never be the same. Shame on you!!! What are you Apple, some sort of perverts with a bikini fetish disguised as sports??? Ban this app to the abyss of eternal flames of shame just like the others. The "night of long knives" you started on feb 19th must not stop here.
PS: Could we please add gun apps to the health and productivity section. What the hell, let's add them to education too. That way I won't have to have the "Guns and bees" awkward conversation with my children.
Shweeet
Yo-booyah!
Version: 1.0.0
Missing Marrisa Miller - but Bar anr Brooklyn are hotttttt. Don't mind the two bucks for additional media.
Foul play Apple...Foul play.
GCdoesit
Version: 1.0.0
If you're eliminating boob apps, eliminate em' all!! If anything larger companies like this should have been eliminated 1st! They have to spare, but it's the small guy that gets screwed once again. Apple congrats, you did it again! Flexing your like Arnie the Govenatorbravo!!
Titilating
Anderson Imes
Version: 1.0.0
This application features attractive women in bikinis and therefore should be banned! Banned I say! Lest I be aroused by my iPhone!
release date matches date of ban on swimsuit apps
QSapien
Version: 1.0.0
So how much money did you give Steve Jobs to eliminate your competition?
Ok now I'm really confused
Digitalangeldollars
Version: 1.0.0
They claim they removed all the apps of this nature because of parents and developers complaining. Meanwhile playboy and this app remain up and running. This is complete bs and a slap in the face to developers. Why would anyone want to spend money and time developing around rules apple created if apple can just turn around and remove the app without just cause. I'm officially boycotting apple, returning my iPhone for a droid and going back to good old uncensored Microsoft.
App should be banned like the rest!
Kahman315
Version: 1.0.0
Why is this crappy app allowed but all other bikini apps banned? Apparently Apple is just playing favorites with SI and Playboy. What a joke!
Crap
LSU Kyle
Version: 1.0.0
The free version has about 10 pics and 3 vids and the rest just asks u to buy the app. Waste of time
Apple you are a bunch of hypocrites
Modug
Version: 1.0.0
You just banned all applications having women showing any parts of their bodies. Why isn't this app banned? Implement parental controls in the app store so kids can't see any apps with sexual content. Problem solved. Stop being so prude and let the app store grow like a real market.
Ban this app!!!!!
FloydFett
Version: 1.0.0
Either bring back the other bikini apps with the same level of skin as the Sports Illustrated app, or ban this app too!!!!!
Better
ilikeggzz
Version: 1.0.0
they added some new models and the pictures got a lot hotter!
