Alert: Grab 'Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner' Before it Disappears Forever
Mini_discussion_bubble Touch Arcade - Posted Wed, 30 Mar 2011 04:09:00 UTC +00:00
Kotaku is reporting that after the end of March, the augmented reality shooter Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner [$2.99] will be pulled from the App Store. We took a look at this title when it was announced in early November, with its release coming just a couple of weeks later. The game allows you to point the camera of your iOS device towards anything to serve as the backdrop for an intense shootout with Imperial ships as you man the gunner turret on the Millennium Falcon. The game is published by THQ Wireless, but was developed by a small studio called Vertigore. Josh Shabtai, Falcon Gunner’s creative director and head of Vertigore, recently wrote in a blog post that due to THQ’s deal with the owners of everything Star Wars Lucasfilm coming to an end, THQ will not be able to allow Star Wars: Falcon Gunner to be sold in the Read More

7 Star Wars Games on iOS Worth Checking Out
Mini_discussion_bubble iSmashPhone - Posted Wed, 08 Dec 2010 13:56:59 UTC +00:00
Star Wars games are abundant, and that's an understatement. That said, they are also very popular on iOS devices like the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. Developers like THQ Wireless seem to have the license on Star Wars games for iOS, as most games that carry the Star Wars name are THQ's work. Ngmoco, Inc. did develop Imperial Academy, however, which also happens to be free (Nice!).  Have a look at some Star Wars games for iOS that are worth checking out:   1) Star Wars: Imperial Academy The game's description says "Darth Vader wants you for his Imperial Academy" and puts you in four player death matches against other storm troopers. Interesting that the empire would put anyone through this kind of competition before joining the academy. Anyone who watched the Star Wars movies knows that Storm Troopers can't aim worth a damn. Free  2) Star Wars: Lightsaber Duel Read More
THQ Announces 'Star Wars: Falcon Gunner' Augmented Reality Shooter

Developer THQ Wireless is flexing their Star Wars license once again with the announcement of Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner. THQ has brought a number of Star Wars licensed games to the App Store, including Star Wars: Battle for Hoth [$2.99/Lite] and Star Wars: Trench Run [$2.99]. This newly announced Falcon Gunner game takes a slightly different approach, unsurprisingly placing you in the gunner's seat on the Millenium Falcon and having you blast away at enemies in an augmented reality style overlay. We've seen these kinds of games before, but admittedly Star Wars: Falcon Gunner looks to be a fairly high quality effort with a nicely modeled gunner interior and the wonderful authentic Star Wars music and sound effects that I'm such a sucker for. You'll be able to point your device's camera at anything and watch the onslaught of TIE Fighters and other enemies come gunning for you, which leaves Read More

'Star Wars: Trench Run' Updated with New Levels and Ships
Mini_discussion_bubble Touch Arcade - Posted Tue, 20 Jul 2010 18:54:20 UTC +00:00
As you may recall back when Star Wars: Trench Run [$4.99] first came out back in November, we weren't too kind in our review. Basically, in the game, through a series of levels that feel a lot like different Star Wars themed shooter mini-games sewn together with clips from the movies, you re-enact the various events leading up to the original destruction of the Death Star. There wasn't much gameplay to be had in the mission mode, and arcade mode wasn't particularly compelling either. The latest update adds three new levels and introduces four new ships: The Millennium Falcon, the Y-wing, along with both standard TIE fighters and Darth Vader's own TIE fighter. The new levels focus on flying the Millennium Falcon either attacking TIE fighters as you ferry Princess Leia back to the Rebel base or flying over the Death Star trench protecting three Y-wings from TIE fighters and turret Read More

Coming soon: Lightsaber duels on the iPhone
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Sat, 20 Mar 2010 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Do you need a weapon that's not as clumsy or random as a blaster, or perhaps, an elegant weapon from a more civilized age? Soon, there will be an app for that. THQ Wireless, the maker of several Star Wars-themed iPhone apps including The Force Unleashed and Star Wars: Trench Run, will release a new app called Lightsaber Duel early in April. Overall, the app sounds similar to another app called Lightsaber Unleashed, which allows you to swing your iPhone around and make " " noises come out of the speaker. Lightsaber Duel will expand on that idea. Rather than merely going all Star Wars Kid with your iPhone, you'll actually be able to engage in duels with your fellow wannabe Jedi or Sith via a Bluetooth connection with their iPhone. You'll also be able to play music during the duel. However, we're not yet sure if that means only music Read More

Star Wars: Trench Run Brings the Force to the iPhone
Mini_discussion_bubble TheAppleBlog - Posted Tue, 24 Nov 2009 15:00:52 UTC +00:00
Star Wars: Trench Run is finally here and this thing is utterly beautiful, packed with authentic audio and video from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and boasting impressive gameplay visuals. Trench Run is based around the Rebel assault on the Death Star at the end of George Lucas’ classic 1977 movie. Piloting an X-Wing fighter, you begin the game high above the Empire’s dreaded Death Star in an aggressive dogfight with TIE fighters. Once you’ve dispatched them, it’s time to descend into that famous trench and make your approach to a small (two meter wide) thermal exhaust port, which, if memory serves, you’ll find right below the main port. Oh, and, the shaft is ray-shielded so you’ll need to hit it directly with proton torpedoes. The doubting Dodonna’s amongst you might think that impossible — even for an iPhone — but, y’know, womp rats, T-16’s and all that. The Read More

Having become fairly disenfranchised with all things Star Wars over the years, I didn't really expect to like Star Wars: Trench Run. And really, the new game from THQ is little more than two kinds of arcade sequences sprinkled with a few familiar cutscenes. So why can't I stop playing it? Because Trench Run ($4.99) is a little slice of Star Wars heaven, that's why. It reminds me of the old vector-graphics arcade game from the early 80s--a game that consumed a considerable number of my quarters. Of course, visually Trench Run blows that coin-op classic out of the sky. And what it lacks in variety, it makes up for with engaging gameplay. You're at the tilt-sensitive controls of an X-Wing, which you can view from inside the cockpit or from behind. Tapping the right half of the screen fires your guns; tapping and holding the left half engages Force Power, Read More

The Star Wars series is huge. The series has netted billions of dollars in merchandise sales and it comes as no surprise that the games have done just as well. But what does come as a surprise is when an officially licensed Star Wars game hits the app store and delivers a terrible experience. Star Wars Trench Run is a game that was released by the popular iphone flight simulation company Infrared5, the same company who created iFly. The game takes the player through the climax of the series when the X Wings blow up the Death Star. Players will have to dogfight their way to the trenches, destroying Tie Fighters with their expert flying skills. After that, players will have to dodge through the trenches, dodge Darth Vader and eventually launch a shot into the exhaust port to blow up the Death Star. All in all, the entire game lasted Read More

Time for our Wednesday feature that highlights some of the latest iPhone news! On a personal level, the biggest iPhone news for me is the arrival of Star Wars: Trench Run (iTunes link). The $4.99 title offers intuitive gameplay and controls, but can be quite challenging. And the graphics are more than adequate for a handheld game. What I like most about it is what I like about many iPhone games — you don’t need to block an hour or more out of your day. You can simply play whenever you find a few free minutes, which ironically holds true for most iPhone apps: they’re generally offering bite-sized chunks of functionality when you need them. While I’ve been honing my Jedi skills, the rumor mills have ripened with news of an expected Concierge application for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. AppleInsider explains that the Apple-created software will assist with scheduling appointments Read More

Google’s AdMob has launced a new advertising format for apps that you’ll be seeing in supported applications soon. Basically when you launch a supported app you’ll be subjected to a full screen video add. Is this something that would upset you? Millions of dollars worth of iPhone have been stolen in Belgium. THQ’s long awaited title Star Wars: Trench Run has finally hit the App Store. The game lets you be the pilot of an X-Wing fighter as you battle waves of tie fighters above the infamous Death Star. You are then taken into the trenches of the mighty station. Use touch-based controls and the accelerometer to maneuver your way toward the thermal exhaust ports in order to complete your mission. Read More

And, apparently, you can play on the Empire's side: Looks nice in the screenshots, but remember that the $5 Star Wars Trench Run is one of those games that has special graphics features if you run it on the iPhone 3GS. November 17th, 2009 James Isabel We’ve previously told you about THQ Wireless’ plan to reenact the famous Star Wars scene through a game they very accessibly titled Star Wars: Trench Run. Well now it’s available for $4.99! As part of the Rebel Allianceʼs Red Squadron, you dogfight with TIE fighters above the Death Starʼs surface before heading into a trench where you are inundated by cannon fire. Dodge obstacles and stay out of Darth Vaderʼs sights… We gave you the video above since THQ doesn’t have the capabilities of taking great action shots. Also, from the looks of the video, you can easily tell how cool this game is. We’ll update you with a review but for now on: download I say you shall! THQ Wireless released tonight which offers you a chance to relive the key scenes surrounding the destruction of the Death Star by the rebel forces in the original the movie. For anyone who has seen the movie, the plot is laid out for you: combat some Tie fighters, navigate the trench while avoiding obstacles and taking out turrets, avoid Darth Vader's attack from behind and finally shoot your proton torpedoes into the exhaust port. The only tie-in with the Force is the ability to slow-down time by pressing on the left side of the screen which slows the action down. Right side of the screen fires your lasers while a top left button alternates your cockpit or exterior view. The game comes with Mission and Arcade modes. Even after installing latest update, rebooting phone, and then playing through at least one entire arcade mode game before quitting.....THE GAME DOES NOT WORK!!! THQ, please stop posting all the phony 5-star reviews of this game. (Their very obvious and kind of embarassing to read.) No sensible person is really loving this pittiful game experience when all it does is continually crash after the splash screen and logos. THQ; you should be ashamed stealing people's $4.99! What a crime. I cant speak for the iPods or other iPhones but DO NOT purchase this app if you plan to use it on an iPhone 3GS. IT WILL NOT WORK.

For years, I've wanted to have one of those big cabinet Sega games in the basement but this is the next best thing. Star Wars anytime you want it. Both the dog fight and trench run modes are a lot of fun and are filled with official sound effects from the movie, John Williams' soundtrack, and the occasional threats from Darth Vader. The X-Wing fighter handles pretty well but you do feel a little freaky circling around a lot to get a clean shot in dog fight mode. The trench run is very challenging, especially when Vader catches up to you. All in all, a lot of fun and certainly worth the $5. I have no idea how much I blew on the coin-op games but I'm sure I'll be making it back with this application.
It was worth the wait
Mr 53 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been waiting for this game to be released ever since I first saw the preview. All I can say is that I'm not disappointed!! Great game! Awesome graphics....well worth the $5!!!
Fun Game
Lungho69 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
Since the 1.4 update, this game is running perfectly on a 3G. You stupid snot nosed kids need to read and/or learn how to follow directions and the game will never crash. Also, this isn't meant to be some epic shooter. The game is as it is titled, TRENCH RUN!!! If you're old enough to remember the old Star Wars arcade game from the 80's, think of this version as a major facelift.
Perfect quick star wars fix
Benimaru 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
The update worked for me. I fire this up for a few minutes here and there and it always gets comments from folks. A great iPhone game.
Short but awesome
azupko 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Awesome game! Arcade mode is the best imo - you can start from where you left off until you can't get any better. I will make top 10 before long.
Crashes on loading
remagnum 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Using it on 3g iphone. Crashes most of the time when loading. When it does go load there is nothing to shoot at in dogfight mode. Also no sound. Looks like it would be really fun if it was working for me. Maybe I am doing something wrong. Will continue to try it out.
Best Game since " Soozis"

Everything about this is perfect. And I recommend it
Overpriced and short
Shrinkled 2.0 stars Version: 1.4
Held out my review till the new (working) version came out. This game is short. You have done everything you can do in a 15 min play session. The game is broken down into about 5 missions but it's really just 2 things; Dogfight and trench. After you get done with that you can do more of the same and go for a high score. There are movie clips which are nice. Darth vader on the other hand sounds horribly robotic. Might be worth $1-2 but not $5. Wait this one out
Unplayable
Chotty 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Controls seem pointless. You just spin all over the place. Trench mode, NO up or down control, despite reading instructions & several attempts. WTF am I missing here?!?
WAAAY better.
Oh Be 1 4.0 stars Version: 1.4
First version was terrible on the 3g. This resolves all the playability issues that I had. Now it runs great; no lag and same great graphics. Kudos to the programmers.
Promising Game, poor 3G performance
JCFDX 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Truly terrible performance on an iPhone 3G. Should have a disclaimer or an option to adjust settings on iPhone 3G, game stutters and skips and lags rendering input or movement on 3G, def needs the boost from the 3GS hardware bump.
No calibration
Graytiners go 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
No option to calibrate. This is a big problem. Please fix.
3Gs only?
doubl 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
totally unusable on my gen1 phone. Wish I had known. From other reviews it sounds like even the 3G units are too slow. Wish I had my $ back...
I love the game

Boy, This just shows me how cranky and unforgiving some people can be. Take a chill pill. First off I had the black screen the first time with my 2nd generation itouch. I admit I did not take the warning and restart the device before playing so I can't say it would have worked if I had. After that I did as they suggested (deleted it, redownloded and the restarted device before playing) and it worked flawlessly. The developers came out right away and told the buyers right on the itunes page that a fix was awaiting approval. I just downloaded the update and it works great. As far as game quality, I think it rocks. I like the dog fight mode more than the trench run but that is just me. Graphics are great and it is awesome to have the actually sound effects and voices and soundtrack as you play. They even have the R2 droid scream when it is hit in battle! Classic. Great job. I hope they have a hoth battle game next.
15 Minutes of Gameplay? Seriously?

Well executed. Well thought out. Fun to play.

This game is incredible! The controls are awesome and the graphics are just like the movie. The trench in arcade mode is my favorite!!!
Personally, I think it ROCKS \m/
