Superman Review

Posted 01/16/2012 at 12:33pm | by Will Herring Poor Superman. Because of his nigh-invulnerability and near-endless array of preposterous superpowers, DC Comics' star-spangled superhero has had trouble forcing himself into the same video game mold that works so well with many other men (and women) in tights. After all, how can one craft a challenging interactive effort for a man who can smugly shrug off the threats that’d put Batman and Spider-Man six feet under? Superman, a new (and aptly-titled) action-adventure app from Tiger Games and Chillingo, presents a novel take on the red-and-blue blur that works remarkably well on the small screen. It finds our favorite spit-curled Kryptonian flying across a 2D Metropolis cityscape, battling back various “waves” of micro-threats in an effort to beat the clock and rack up as many points as possible. All of the usual dangers are accounted for -- trigger-happy thugs, rampant fires, rogue missiles, Read More
'Superman' Review - Metropolis's No Good, Very Bad Day

Today I saved the citizens of Metropolis from a missile launched from an unknown location. I flew into the sky and intercepted it in midair, then beat it to pieces. It exploded harmlessly over the city. But no time to wait for thanks -- a car full of criminals was escaping down the stretch of road in front of the Daily Planet. I handled them with my laser vision, if you know what I mean. Then that dastardly Lex Luthor unleashed a bunch of sticky bombs in the city. While I was gathering those up, fires started up on a nearby building. Then the meteors fell. But hey, Superman [$0.99 / HD] can handle all that. All in a day's work, as they say. It's just too bad he couldn't be doing it in a better game. One that plays a bit less like The Hero, by Traplight Games, perhaps? It's Read More

The new Superman app for the iPhone and iPod touch might well be the best Superman video game ever made. Of course, that isn’t saying much, considering Superman 64 leads that very short list prior to this installment for the Man of Steel. Developed by Tiger Games and published by Chillingo for iOS, this go round for Clark Kent and company works well enough for the small sticker price of 99 cents. Graphics Superman is a pretty flashy comic book character, and Tiger Games has done him right with their visual style in this application. The graphics for Superman are a highly stylized cel-shaded comic book style, with bright colors popping into the foreground of the screen and illuminating important objects, while the darker tones and more subdued shading illustrate the backdrop of Metropolis. Action graphics are simple, yet work well. Audio The sound effects for the Superman iPhone app is Read More

This one kind of came out of left field -- there isn't really any reason for Chillingo to release a Superman game, especially one created by Flash developer Tiger Games. Superman games in general don't usually work well anyway: How exactly do you put a challenge on pretending to be the Man of Steel himself? But this one works because it stays simple -- you control the big blue boy scout running around Metropolis, and perform various tasks, like stopping robbers, killing big robots, or smashing asteroids or missles as they threaten the city. Most of the gameplay simply consists of flying around, and this is where Tiger Games gets it right -- Metropolis is a nice big 2D world to explore, and arrows on the screen will quickly directly you where Superman needs to go. There's a not-bad storyline propping the whole thing up, but let's be honest, this is Read More
Chillingo brings the first official Superman game to the AppStore

I really don’t understand why it took so long for mobile game publishers and DC Comics to make a Superman game for iOS-based devices, but the good news is that the first such title is now in the AppStore, brought to you by Chillingo. The official pitch goes like this: Become Superman to save the city of metropolis in an all-new adventure for iPhone and iPad. As the man of Steel, use your incredible powers to protect the people of Earth in this stylish, arcade game featuring original artwork, panels and soundtrack. Yep, the game is available in two flavors, one for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and the other one for iPad that (obviously) takes advantage of the additional screen estate. The Superman game trailer looks promising and I hope we won’t have to wait for too long to see Chillingo launching it in the Android Market, too. And now Read More

Believe it or not, we are getting into the start of the holiday season, and that means tons of action on the App Store as people head over to buy apps for their new devices. There are a bunch of exciting new apps to check out today, so here's a quick list: Man, that's a whole lot of great games! This isn't even all of the app releases out this week, and my guess is that we haven't even seen the biggest flood of new apps -- that usually comes around Thanksgiving, and then ramps up again right as Apple freezes the store before Christmas. It's going to be a busy holiday season in iOS gaming for sure. Read More

iPhone App $0.99 Our Review By Greg Dawson on November 17th, 2011 Rating: :: SUPERPOWERS Lex Luthor wants to take over the city, but Superman has other plans for the evildoer. Developer: Price: $.99 Version: 1.0 App Reviewed on: iPhone 4 Graphics / Sound Rating: User Interface Rating: Gameplay Rating: Re-use / Replay Value Rating: Overall Rating: Kal-El from the planet Krypton, or Superman as we now know him, is available on the small screen and available in the App Store as of today. Based on one of DC Comics’ most prolific superheros of all times, Superman is an action game that pits the Man of Steel against, who else, Lex Luthor. But this time, the story starts out with Mr. Luthor playing a good guy and working to help the city. But we all know how that usually ends. And we were all right. Soon Luthor’s “good” cops are “protecting” Read More
